Clever and useful design, but not meant for serious hiking
I was very intrigued when I saw a backpack with a solar panel for charging devices, and even more so when I saw that it could fold up into a small bag. I suspected that it would be cheap quality to fold up that small, but I figured it was worth checking out. I haven't used it for hiking yet, but I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of the materials. The nylon feels strong, and the zippers operate smoothly. It was not difficult to fold it back up into the original bag, and the solar panel attaches simply with a zipper on the top and velcro on the bottom. There are two roomy compartments and the typical side pockets for water bottles. The smaller compartment has a couple of slots to hold smaller items, which are below a slot to run earplug wires if you want to store your phone there while you are using the pack.I only had a little daylight left after I opened it today so I can't tell you how efficiently the solar panel charges yet, but I topped off a small battery pack (not included - more on that later) and a phone and it seemed to work well. Solar panels are most efficient when perpendicular to the sun, so I'm skeptical how much of a charge you'll get with the panel hanging vertically on your back, but even brief periods of laying the pack on the ground could help keep your phone charged.Overall, I think this is a nice little pack and the solar panel could come in very handy. What I don't like is the thinness of the shoulder pads. That is a necessity to make it fold up so small, but for me it would make it unusable for a hike of any length. The little manual that comes with it makes numerous mention of an optional battery pack which seemed odd given that it wasn't even an option. There is a whistle built into the chest strap, but I could only get it to work by blowing brief, strong puffs and it wasn't very loud.I think this pack should be marketed as an emergency pack that you keep in your car. It's small so it will fit just about anywhere and the solar panel could be a lifesaver in an emergency to keep your communications working. That's how I'm planning on using it anyway.
