If you have ever used a weed whacker before, stringing it is a breeze. simple and you can spool a pretty long length of string in the head that comes with it. But you could always swap out the head for most standard trimmer heads. my brother put a head on with plastic blades.
I would say if you had a 12v car inverter to charge a battery on the go and a 9 or 12 Ah battery or 2, this would even be a serious contender for the full time landscaper over many 2-stroke models. It is definitely not as sturdy or powerful as a high end Stihl, but for most applications its more than enough.
As a home owner, this is perfect. no gas, no hassle with pull starting. just pop in a battery and go. Plus you can use the batteries on a multitude of other tools if you own them. My ONLY issue with this machine is that on the guard on the weed wacker head, the blade that cuts the string from spreading out to far is plastic and not metal. i think that will wear out pretty fast. other than that, perfect machine for the everyday home owner!
I absolutely love not having to mess with keeping gas, especially mixed gas for 2-cycle engines in storage, and having to yank-crank the thing, especially for the first time to warm it up. Pop a fresh battery in it and I'm good to go. Having a brushless motor in it should mean years of service with little to no maintenance other than feeding it string and keeping it relatively clean. It does come with a three year manufacturer's warranty, so that gives me some peace of mind.
I gave battery life five stars because even though I bought the bare tool, I can pop in my smallest 2 Ah battery and get a couple of minutes of use out of it, enough to clean up a small spot in my yard. A 6 Ah battery will trim my whole yard.
On to the major flaw. I don't know what the engineers at DeWalt were thinking when they designed the trimmer head. Like every other trimmer head I know of, when the string wears out, you bump the trimmer head on the ground to feed more line. The way this one is designed, there is a large gap that allows grass, vines, and other trash to build up inside the trimmer head and pack in behind the part of the head that moves when you bump it on the ground to engage/disengage a set of teeth on either side of the string reel that let the trimmer line feed out. This trash gets packed tightly enough over time that the trimmer head cannot move enough to allow the mechanism to work. In my case this happened before I ran out of the line that came supplied in the trimmer head when I bought the trimmer.
I had read about this design flaw on this unit when researching string trimmers but had read so many glowing reviews about the trimmer itself that didn't mention anything about a problem with the trimmer head that I figured that a couple of people had simply run into some particularly nasty vines, or were using their trimmers in very harsh environments, and I don't consider my property to be particularly harsh.
Well, it happened to me too, so that pretty much tells me that over time anyone who uses this string trimmer with any amount of weeds with grass longer than a couple inches is either going to have to spend time taking their trimmer head apart and cleaning it out repeatedly, or do what I am doing and replace it with a different head.
I did some research, and among the landscaping community, the ECHO / Shindaiwa Speed-Feed 400 is widely regarded as the best head to have on a string trimmer, reloads string incredibly easily and quickly, and does not suffer from trash buildup like the factory Dewalt one on this string trimmer. (Update: Just make sure you get model# 99944200907 if you decide to get one - just trying to save you from possibly making the same dumb, impatient mistake I did that your can read about below. LOL)
Others I have read reviews from have had nothing but great things to say about this trimmer after this upgrade, so I bought one here on Amazon and can't wait to get it installed.
I love the trimmer itself - I just hope that since I'll have to have the head disassembled anyway to get all of the built-up cruft out of it, that installing my new ECHO head instead of the badly designed old one will give me truly trouble-free trimming. I'll be back to edit my review if it doesn't.
Update - Don't make the mistake I did and order the wrong Speed-Feed 400 model. The one you want that works with this DeWalt trimmer is model# 99944200907. I was too frustrated with the old trimmer head to slow down and take my time to verify that I had found the right item, and ordered model# 99944200908, so back to Amazon they had to go. My bad.
I got the correct part in today and it is a perfect fit. It came with a handful of adapters and nuts and other bits, but fortunately for me none of that was needed - it just screws right on, left-handed threads so counter-clockwise, but it fits right out of the package no adapters needed.
I tested it out and it works like a charm and even comes with 20' of heavier .095" line. The original line is .080".
Whoever designed, as well as whoever approved the DeWalt design for production (this is version 4 of the thing too, which makes it even worse), should be forced to use it on any string trimmer they ever use for the rest of their lives.
It is even an obvious knock-off of the Speed-Feed 400, but has that huge gap between the bottom plate and the spool that allows all the trash in. It's a shame. A tight gap would make all the difference.

They make a higher power 60v version, but I've not needed it on my 1/4 acre.
Included string line is strong but forgiving if you touch a tree.
