I wanted to repair them but the breaks are in a spot where a splice would be a huge pain and likely not long term. I reached out to the company and got a response from a gentleman named "Steve" whose email title was CEO (!?) within an hour, asking for some details on the headphones to see which version I had.
He suggested that the easiest thing to do would be to just swap out the entire speaker assembly after seeing the pictures I sent him, stating they were an upgrade to the ones I got back in 15, and that he'd throw in a cable extension (nice!). He also stated that I'd be happy if I upgraded the ear cushions as well, which I declined to do, since while the new speakers were only $45, with the cost of the cushions we'd be getting close to it making more sense to buy more headphones. At this point we had exchanged I guess a half a dozen emails.
When I got my confirm email, apparently my comfort concerned Steve enough that in addition to the cable extenders, he was giving me the new ear cushions, which he politely suggested I clean from time to time, with instructions for doing so (yeah, I abused the old ones).
Point being- These are worth every penny they're charging for them. I'd have a hard time going back to a different brand- they sound and feel that good. But the customer service and support is insane. Not saying they're going to be giving out freebees like mad- I am almost embarrassed that they did. But man, talk about standing behind your product.
I used the $50 Vic Firths for three years before getting these, and the difference is massive. I used to get headaches from wearing the VFs for more than an hour or so because of how tight they are to wear (though I might just have a wider head than average), and would still find myself turning up the volume to max because I couldn't hear the music over the drums. With the EX29s, all of that is gone. They sit comfortably on my head, and apply virtually no pressure to my temples. They feel like a pair of Beats - that's how comfortable they are. The noise-canceling is also miles better than the VFs. I now keep my volume at around 50%-70% depending on how loud I'm playing. There's no ear fatigue after wearing these for hours on end either. The audio quality, for the money, is impressive. The mix is fairly balanced, with the lows being a little more pronounced (again, NOT studio monitors), which as a drummer is great to listen to. While I can only really compare these to the VFs, the difference has been night and day. I only bought these because the right driver in the VFs gave out, but after using the EX29s for about a month now, I'm never going back.
If you're a drummer, in need of a fairly inexpensive set of noise-canceling headphones, do yourself a favor and pick these up. You won't be disappointed.
The sound quality is average with everything sounding pretty flat. These headphones are like a vice, and are really uncomfortable when you first get them. I seemed to be mildly ok with them after a while, but the clamping force was a major complaint that I heard from anyone who has tried them. They also fold, which makes them easy to transport.
My main issue with these is that, aside from the unusually short warranty (for headphones that have a price in the triple digits), the build quality is poor. One major flaw is with the part that connects the headband to the speakers. The speakers have a U shaped plastic part connected to them, and there is a small rod where it snaps into a socket on the headband. These two components are what allow the speakers to stay attached to the headband while still being able to move a small amount. These things aren't secured with screws or anything, it's sheer force that's keeping them from separating. Of course, the rod on one of the speakers eventually snapped off after about a year (when the warranty expired.) I would like to note that I didn't abuse them beyond dropping them onto heavily cushioned surfaces from a short distance. My use was also pretty casual, meaning on most days I would use them once for a short period of time.
The company does sell replacement parts, but don't bother trying to replace any headband related parts after they fail, because it's basically impossible to reattach everything. I wasn't able to do it, because an excessive amount of force is required to somehow get the rods back into the sockets (I was trying to reattach the unbroken right speaker that was removed for inspection.) It was so excessive that I gave up after a while because I thought I was going to break them.
The company does sell parts for these headphones, but it's not possible to buy a new U shaped plastic thing. You have to buy an entire expensive assembly. At this point, it would have been expensive enough that it would have made more sense to buy the same pair of headphones if I really wanted to keep them. I tried epoxying a metal rod around the area where the other one cleanly snapped off, but, as I mentioned earlier, it's basically impossible to get these things back into their sockets. To make insertion of the rods easier (and less impossible), I filed the sockets on the headband a little, which was a mistake. The alterations did make it easier to reattach the speakers, but it will result in them detaching easily if too much is taken off (or sometimes popping out and violently falling on something) if they move too much in the "wrong" directions. Essentially, they became unusable quickly after initially breaking, and it's not possible to easily do a DIY fix.
I would stay away from these, as it's really easy to find much nicer professional headphones with longer warranties that aren't constructed poorly starting a moderately higher price than what these cost. Even if most other headphones don't explicitly advertise the anti-sound leaking feature, it's not hard to find quality closed headphones that do the same thing. These headphones seem ridiculously flimsy compared to a lot of other headphones from more established manufacturers.
