I've got to admit, I've been hooked on the cold brew function and haven't even ventured into the flash chill territory yet. The cold brew is just too good and so simple! I just drop in about 8 tea bags, let it sit in the fridge overnight, and wake up to fragrant, refreshing tea. Technically if you look up each tea you will see the optimal amount of brewing time, but I’ve accidentally left the tea bags in for days before with absolutely no issue.
The design is pretty well thought out too. It comes with an infuser chamber that screws right into the lid so it’s easy to add/remove. And the extra little cup that catches any drips after you remove the infuser? Genius. I never would have thought of it but the small details make all the difference. I've been sticking to tea bags for the sake of convenience, but it's nice to know it can handle loose leaf tea since a lot of the high quality blends are loose leaf.
I've experimented with green tea, spearmint, and hibiscus so far, and they've all turned out amazing. Honestly, it's like this tea maker was designed for people who want easy convenience. I've been trying to swap coffee for tea for awhile now, but I kept forgetting about my steeping tea until hours later when it was the steepiest it could possibly be. This iced tea maker's been a lifesaver - or should I say, a tea-saver? I've almost completely cut out coffee now because making delicious tea is just so effortless with this thing.
The only little hiccup is the staining from some of the more pigmented teas. I’ve found that it can get a kind of yellowish tint. However a deep clean with baking soda and vinegar every other week keeps it looking fresh and new!
I can’t recommend this enough, I’m thinking about getting several in multiple colors so I can color code my teas or do a caffeine/non caffeine blend each time.
I really especially like that you screw the infuser into the top of the pitcher so it stays totally shut off from the main pitcher, meaning no leaves or bits of fruit ever leak out. It's also cool that you can seal the pitcher shut by twisting it, keeping the tea fresher and preventing the fridge from smelling funky.
The one thing I don't really care for/understand is the little infuser stand that came with it. Is it, like, to hold the infuser up when you're pouring loose tea into it? Or to keep it fro getting tea everywhere when you remove it? I don't really know, and the instructions didn't really mention it, but it's not a big deal at all. I'm pretty sure that once I figure out how it's supposed to be actually used, I'll end up liking it lol.
Last thing to note is that this pitcher is deceptively large! It looks small, but it holds a good amount of tea. Don't forget that to brew cold tea, you need to heat water up to just under boiling, pour until the pitcher is about halfway full, and then let it steep. We like to let it steep for about 20 minutes for extra strength tea, and then fill 'er up with ice cubes. Shake shake shake, pour, enjoy a cuppa.
Ease of Use - the strainer attaches to the removeable center of the lid. This makes it fairly unstable when filling with tea. A cup "holder" comes with the product, but it is of no real use as the cup does not firmly secure the strainer. Though the strainer is very fine, some small particles of loose leaf tea did manage to make it into the container. The strainer extends deep into the container allowing you to brew a small amount, however given the size of the overall container I'm not sure when you would actually want to do that. (Why not brew it in a cup or tumbler. A wider shorter strainer would also be better for cleaning (see below).
Cleaning - The strainer is long and narrow making it difficult to clean the bottom if you have large hands. the fine strainer catches on bottle brushes and the tapering makes it difficult to get into the corners. Rinsing it out is simple, but if more aggressive cleaning is needed, it will be difficult.
Overall- Works as intended and is of expected quality for the price.
Top reviews from other countries
I always use 8 tsp (roughly measured) of various teas from David's Tea and it works like a charm.
Pros:
- Very quick (30 seconds to flash chill)
- Easy to clean (just soak in soap and water then rinse)
- Perfect size for standard kettles
- Great spout
Cons:
- Infuser doesn't have any mesh on the bottom which makes it harder to simply rinse out between uses.
- Infuser has two sections that are incredibly tedious and difficult to screw together. I just leave them screwed together.
Neither of the cons are significant issues that would factor into me buying this again but if they made a new version in the future I'd hope that they would address these minor issues as it would make this pitcher absolutely perfect!
Note: I read another review saying it "doesn't instant chill" and it waters down your tea. Yes, shaking a container filled with very hot water and ice cubes will melt the ice cubes; that is the point of the pitcher. If you find this dilutes the flavour of the tea too much you can easily just add more tea.
