It’s very difficult to get the lid off after each faze of polishing. I wish the top had a lip on it.

Bought this 5yrs ago as a basic tumbler and have run many courses of stone thru it. It works great! The bad reviews about leaking sound to me like they just didn't get the lid on properly. And yes, it is kind of hard to get the lid off, you have to have it on tight and sealed so it doesn't leak. The noise is so so, I mean you are tumbling rocks. This is a good product and I would order it again.

Just got my hands on the national geographic starter rock tumbler kit and I'm absolutely stoked! this thing is a beast, turns rocks into sparkly crystals like a pro (or, like, a kid, lol). it's a bit loud, but hey, it's worth it - just toss it in the garage and let it do its magic. what i love most is that it comes with everything you need to get started - no extra purchases necessary! the leak-proof design is a total win, too. all in all, this thing is a solid 5 stars - perfect for the little geologists out there (or, you know, the slightly-bigger geologists like me)!

My second grade students became interested in rock tumbling this year after another student brought in their collection. Soon they started collecting rocks on the playground. I knew I had to capitalize on their excitement, so I found this kid friendly rock tumbler.

First things first, it is AMAZING. It comes with everything you need, including cool rocks ready to tumble, although you’ll probably need to restock the grinding powders if you’re going to do multiple sets like we have.

      A few things to note:
It is hard to open and close. Have someone strong on hand to do it, because I struggle to do it myself.

It is LOUD. I mean, it’s rocks tumbling in a jar. Of course it’s loud. But find someplace to set it up near a plug because it’s going to be distracting otherwise. In the classroom, we stuffed it in a cabinet - still made noise but muffled it enough that we could still focus. At home, we did it on the back porch. I’m sure the neighbors could hear it on quiet nights, but oh well. As long as you muffle it, it’ll sound like a white noise.

Last but not least, this process takes a lot of TIME! About a month from start to finish. Be patient. The good news is that aside from opening it, filling it, and plugging it in, there’s minimal upkeep. You just leave it alone and let the tumbler do its job. Opening it every week was the highlight of our week. The process is so cool even after just the first cycle. It’s so worth the time it takes.

Don’t drain it in your sinks. The gunk will mess up your pipes. After the last cycle, the rocks won’t be fully polished. We bought some mineral oil and polished them ourselves for a nice sheen. Worth the additional extra few bucks.

After school let out, I brought it home to do it again with my toddlers. They loved it just as much as the big kids.

I would recommend this to any future geologist in the making!

Looked ok out of box step one. Will not open even a strrong man with muscle could turn lid. So here we sit, no fun at all. disappointing present. Never again 3 days later success. Got it open everyone so happy. Its like a never ending story as we put second step grit in ...motor working and now the barrel is not turning. Just put in garbage. Some sad little Grandchildren.

I’m not sure if we just got a faulty one or not but ours leaked after changing the rocks into the different mixtures. I tried everything and it still leaked. So we just took the rocks and cleaned them ourselves and left them at the process that they were at. I also didn’t know it was like a week long process or longer, honestly think some stages were a week long so it would have taken a whole month, which to a 5 year old is too long. I’m sure that’s how the process normally takes but it just doesn’t keep the attention of a young kid. Cleaning the rocks and stuff between was pretty messy and you cant put it down your sink so probably not the best to do during winter if you live in a snowy place. I think the quality could have been better, like why it constantly leaked I’m not sure. I didn’t ask for a refund or an exchange so I can’t tell you how their customer service is. The instructions were clear and easy to follow though.

Got this for curious granddaughter’s birthday. She’s like me and collects rocks. So I got her this to help build her curiosity for her(us)(lol) she and her dad got it going the same day. She’s excited to see her polished rocks.

Ths was a replacement gift for a cheap rock tumbler, far better quality and eaiser to use, it works and is easy to use. It is also far quieter than the cheaper tumbler. It turned out to be an excellent and well received gift, well worth paying more and getting a product that works.
