Awesome Pocket Drone at a Great Price
Though drones have been around for a few years, they don't get old or tired and are fun for young and old. I enjoy my electronics quite a bit so when I spotted this on Amazon and at the price it was listed - how could I not buy it? The drone arrived within 1-week of placing the order, and arrived packed very well in an outer box with bubble-wrap keeping it safe in the outer box. The box the drone came in is also very sturdy and something that would look good given as a gift. Once you get the drone out of the box, it comes in a plastic tray (like every other product out there). The drone along with the controller, a USB cable (to charge the drone) and some spare propellers should the ones on the drone become damaged from too much play. Once everything is out of the box and laid out you have the drone (I got a gold color drone and LOVE IT the white propellers really give it contrast. The drone is well built and very light. The legs have rubber stoppers at the bottom so when it lands it does not damage the drone. The back of the drone has a USB outlet as you need to charge the drone for about 70-minutes to get 5-minutes of use. You get a user manual -- which I recommend you read as there is some important information in there (connecting [pairing] the controller to the drone, how to turn the drone on/off, controlling the drone (move left/right, forward/backwards), how to use hover mode. There is also information on low-voltage protection (when the battery on the drone is low), over-current protection (when the drone encounters an impact), calibration, fast/slow speed and of course how to do a 360-degree stunt flip. If you are someone that likes to tinker, they also provide a good breakdown of the drones assembly (though I wouldn't be disassembling this). Four additional propellers are provided, in addition to a mini Phillips screwdriver is also provided so you can unscrew the controller and insert the batteries (you will need 4 AAA batteries -- they are not provided). Now I was really excited to try the drone out so didn't wait the full 70-minutes to let it charge. For the most part using the controller is intuitive, you have two joysticks on the controller (left and right) along with a button to fine-tune the movement, and an on/off button . On the front of the controller you have two more buttons for high/low speed and a very cool feature 360-degree stunt flip button! Another cool feature is an auto hover mode. You can even use the drone indoors, which is how I was using it and once the weather improves I'll try it outside as well. As you play with the drone be careful of the propellers - they rotate very fast and you could hurt yourself if you are not careful but that said, using common sense would avoid hurting yourself and damaging the drone. Having played with the drone for about 1-2 weeks, I can say that this is one of the best purchases I've made. The drone is nice and small, charges within an hour and gives you enough time to play. I am probably going to buy a second drone for my son and we'll race these!

The Syma X20 is great! The X20 is much easier to fly indoors, and much more stable, than a drone and helicopter I’ve had in the past. By the time of its second flight (or should I say second charge) I was already figuring out how to fly it around the house without frequently crashing it.

It is a lot more fun flying a drone when you can easily control it and fly it without constant crashes!

The only other drone I’ve tried in the past was a small drone (slightly larger) that ran nearly twice the price of this drone. It was three years ago and it was a well-reviewed “beginners” drone. But while it was fun to fly I was never quite able to really get the hang of flying it without quickly crashing every minute or so after a few months my interest faded away. I had similar experiences with a small helicopter a couple years before that.

With the X20 I was quickly able to learn to control it. It is much more stable and can hover in one place with a minimal amount of effort and is lots of fun to fly around the house. I did spend a few minutes getting it trimmed, as described in the instructions, to stabilize it but was able to accomplish that in my second 5 minute session with it which helped a lot – a tip I read in another review here.

I like the looks and size of the X20 as well. I really appreciate the fact that you charge it by plugging a standard micro USB charging cable (one cable is included with the kit) into a socket on the drone itself. The drone and helicopter I used in the past required removing the battery and a special charging cable. Now I don’t have to worry about finding the charging cable as it’s the same kind used for many small electronics, including most non-apple phones and tablets, so I always have one handy around the house.

Since receiving the X20 about two weeks ago I’ve only had a handful of chances to fly it (I’m a busy adult) but with it being so easy to control and fly I’m loving it!

Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of having a remote control flying toy small enough to fly around the house. I'm pleased to say that the Syma X20 does a great job answering that dream.

I love that it's small enough to maneuver indoors and light enough that it is unlikely to damage anything if you run into it. Speaking of running into things, the propeller guards do a great job (see photo). They are slightly flexible and protect both the drone and any surfaces you inevitably bump while learning to fly. It's a really nice touch that a spare set of propellers are provided in the box, but I have not broken one yet, thanks to the guards.

The manual is fairly easy to understand. A beginner should be able to get started right away. Some of the more advanced features are not as clear but still understandable with some time. I would recommend that beginners learn how the trimming function works right away. This allows you to adjust the hover so the drone will stay in one place without drifting.

Once the drone is trimmed, it stays near where you put it when you take your fingers off the controls. This built-in stabilization makes beginning flying very easy. You can fly very slowly while getting used to the controls, but after some practice you can fly surprisingly fast (see video). I like to fly around and through things in the house as a fun obstacle course, like our hanging lights (see video and photo). And of course, the flip feature adds a fun touch that looks really impressive to onlookers.

Air currents can be a challenge for a small drone and this little unit handles them pretty well. I would not fly outside with much wind but it does fly well on still days or with only light breezes. Inside, ceiling fans and air ducts can be difficult for beginners, but become a fun challenge after some experience.

I would have liked to have a little more run time on the batteries. I’m getting about six minutes on a full charge. But it’s not too bad for such a small device and I’m usually ready for a break after a full run.

All in all, I’d say it a really fun little drone at a good price.

This is an excellent introductory quadcopter. It is small with propeller protectors. It charges with a standard micro-USB charger. Any one that works should charge this quadcopter up. It took me a while to fly this as I ran out of AAA batteries and having just moved getting more was not high on my list. But we finally got some more AAA batteries. The controller takes 4 AAA batteries. The flight is fairly stable. I had some issues getting to hover without a minor drift. I tried the calibration function. It helped but didn't eliminate the drift. It is your call if this is important. Small correction actions keep it from drifting off. Not bad at all for a low cost small quadcopter. I would recommend this for learning out how to fly a quadcopter. This can be easily flown indoors. It does not have a camera.

The battery seems to last a long time. I haven't timed it yet. It stayed charged for the 2 or 3 weeks between when I purchased this and I finally got the AAA batteries and the quadcopter still turned on. So the battery is a fairly good battery as it didn't lose too much charge just by sitting around unused and in storage.

The altitude hold feature of this drone makes it very easy to fly. I found that in order to land, there is a lag to the vertical control. So when I push down the throttle, there is a discernible lag. Also, I shut it down from at least 4 ft so the blades stop when it lands. This is perfect for indoor flying. I would be very leery of outdoor flying unless winds are calm with no significant gust. Still a fun toy to play with, easy to recharge and keep in mind the 4 AAA batteries for the controller unit.
