Here are the PRO'S about the self propelled model (and the non self propelled also) in my opinion -EVERYTHING- it's powerful with an easy to reach lever to adjust forward speed, no gas cans sitting around and no trips to get it , no choking, puking, sputtering engine, no maintenance other than change the blade and give it a bath, lawn looks beautiful, it's quiet, ONE lever height adjustment-no screwing around with 4 wheels, it automatically supplies more power when you get into heavier/thicker grass, easy to clean up, it makes mowing enjoyable. The batterys- charge extremely fast and last the whole 45 minutes each, when they're dead they're dead. No power loss toward the end. I only found one little quirk and that's when you release the self propelled lever to pull it backwards you have to give it a tiny push forward first or the back (propelling) wheels drag. Also people were asking where can you get replacement blades as they are difficult to find online. No info comes up when use the blade number. So you either have your local Snapper dealer order them for you or call Briggs and Stratton - you won't find them on either web site. (Guys- you need to fix this as it is very annoying, especially given that there's no mention in any of the accompanying literature that addresses the blade issue). I ordered 3 so I didn't have to hunt them down for awhile. $18 each- give or take a buck . CON'S - NOTHING. It does the same beautiful job the other one does. Some people griped about having to release the propelling lever to pull the mower backward - That's like complaining because there's not enough raisins in your cinnamon roll.
So there you have it. I think Snapper and Briggs and Stratton should be given a medal for developing this fantastic mower, both models. It certainly has made my life easier. Hope my experiences help in your decision making. You will not regret picking up this mower.
My lot is flat, so I do not need to use the self propelled feature, as the mower is so light and easily maneuvered. To do my whole lot by using the push feature only, I would have to change out the battery 3 times. The battery charger in less than 30 minutes. The cut that this unit produces is fantastic. I use the mulching feature. The mower adjust to thicker grass by increasing speed automaticly. There is 1 handle that is used to adjust the height, and it is easily done.
Over all I am really happy with the mover. But it is not perfect and I won't be getting rid of the old gas mover. If I had it to do it again I wouldn't have bough the self propelled version. It is heaver and the battery get more drained, although the two battery can cut my whole lawn.
Pro:
No messing with gas/oil
Only maintenance is sharping the blade
The 2 battery can cut my 1/4 acre lawn without running out of power
Battery's charge in under an hour from totally dead
Handles well
Self propelled help make it easier
Easy start, no pulling and pulling and swearing and swearing
Cuts well
Battery is the same as other Snapper tools, allowing me to share between them
Cons:
Stops for no reason that I can figure. Might be 5-10 times per cutting. It would be nice if there were lights or something that told me why it stops. Seem to happen when turning on or off the self propelled, gets worse when the battery is low or the bar moves a little.
Doesn't do as well as a gas mover if cutting high grass.
The self Propelled control is very awkward
Seem too easy to let go of the blade bar
I have read that the blade needs to be sharper than a gas mower.
The battery are currently pretty expensive to buy. The 82v 2amp is $199 and the 82v 4Amp is $299.
11/9/21- I figure it is time for an update after 3 seasons of use. I still haven't gotten rid of my old gas mover and won't. Every year I use this more and more and the gas less. Have discovered a couple things. It seems to stop for no reason because of battery heat. On hot days I try to cut early and late when it is cooler, I don't mind it either. I also try to take a quick break or swap the battery to use the other one. This makes the issue much less annoying. Fall spring doesn't have a problem. The new issue I found is it doesn't do well if cutting from tall to short. I normally leave it a longer so the grass shades its self so I don't have to water. Before I went on vacation this summer for 3 week I decided to cut it really short before I left. I did it in stages went down two on the height adjustment the mover struggled and took 4 battery's to complete the lawn, most of the time I can do it on 2. A couple days later I went down another 2. This time the mover would stall and I ended up raising it up one. It took 5 batterys, I only have 4 so I had to charge 1 to finish. The day before I left I decided to get some gas and cut it very low with the gas mover, which has no issue. When I got back I didn't even try the Electric I when strait for the gas mover. Keep in mind if you like to cut your grass short. It seems to struggle more. I like to cut it one from the top. So, it works great.
5/23/23 Wanted to give another update after 4 years of ownership. Still overall happy with the mower. I had hoped that Battery price would have come done by now. I would have liked to get a couple 4 or 5 amp ones. Prices are down but not much. Worse yet I just check there are no Brigg and Station one for sale on Amazon right now. Battery's are my issue with the mover. They are wearing down. In optimal conditions two would cut my lawn, that is no longer the case. It takes 3 or maybe 4. Also one of the battery's only charges to 3 of the 4 lights on the gauge on the battery.
