Compatible with Mid-2012 Mac Book Pro (Mojave Update) - Important Read for MBP Users
I love this product, I am tempted to get another to see how many monitors my MBP can drive. There were some questions I had that the reviews did not really answer for me I will be posting my findings below.1). Works with Mid-2012 Mac Book Pro and up (seems to work with older MBPs using intel CPUs as well, may very)2). Works with Mojave OS (download driver from website; install w/o adapter plugged in, reboot, then insert adapter)3). Works with High Sierra OS (follow question 2's instructions)4). You can output video via the adapter, and the mini-display port and the onboard screen at the same time5). The USB to HDMI adapter uses very little processing power or memory, I saw less than a 1% bump6). There is very little lag on the adapter screen, does not impact video played only on that screen7). Playing a video partly on the adapter screen and another screen will shows some lag/tearing between the two8). USB 2.0 will drive 1080p but the clarity and responsiveness seems ever so slightly off (could just be my eyes though)9). USB 2.0 seems to best drive 1600 x 900 or in my specific case it looks and works flawlessly10). Events noticed on 7 may change with a USB 3.0 port11). Adapter comes with HDMI to DVI adapter, does not include HDMI to VGA adapter

***UPDATED - it currently DOES NOT work with the last OS update to macOS Catalina 10.15.1
BUT, I will search around for possible fixes as others figure this out. This is NOT a problem with this unit, but with the New Mac OS Update*****. If you are still running Mojave 10.14, it is still working fine!

After reading the reviews and researching the compatibility issues with macOS 10.14, I decided to go for it. I needed a second screen for my work and the only way to get it to work was with a HDMI to USB adapter. This was one of the few connectors that indicated (within the reviews) there was hope with my mac setup. Go to the bottom of the review to get the details of my fix. (I am NOT a techie, and I was able to get this to work very easily with a few extra google searches)

Once correctly uploaded for my operating system, the connection works perfectly. There is no real noticeable lag - except on occasion when I'm running LOTS of screens at one time. I only use this for spreadsheets and other Office Products. The colors on my spreadsheets are perfect, even with my cheap display I use at home.

The unit connects easily between an HDMI and the USB port and it came with HDMI to DVI adapter, if your monitor doesn't have the HDMI connector. It also comes with the CD with the drivers, but in my situation A. I don't have a CD drive in my laptop and B. I needed a few extra driver downloads to make it work.

Yes there are cheaper versions (I highly doubt I could have been able to get those to work so easily) and there are more expensive versions - this was very much worth the cost for the ease of setting up and getting around the known problems with my OS. I will buy this one again if I need a second one.

Here is the steps/links I used to set it up:
As expected I received an error trying to upload the DisplayLink software, but thanks to another reviewer I found a link to a fix, but I still had one more adjustment to make. I couldn't find the exact article noted by Mark on 11/19/17 until I googled the key phrase "macOS High Sierra: Video functionality not enabled" - the first hit was the article on DisplayLink and I followed the directions.

I then noticed the screen connected, but it was blank - not even the mouse function. I tried to download the software again at the suggestion of another site, but then I got the following message:
"Displaylink driver can't be installed on this disk. is downgrade" - a google search of this phrase led me to another DisplayLink Forum solution (by Alban Rampon on 11/5/18) with multiple downloads depending on the specific issue you are experiencing and the exact OS. I used the one describing the black extended display(s)… so one more download and Voila! Perfect!!
The seller clearly notes on the description that this product is not suggested with macOS 10.13 & 10.14 due to known issues. I took a gamble after reading the reviews and seeing solutions. It took a very reasonable amount of time to find and download the additional drivers, and I couldn't be happier!

    Color: BlackVerified Purchase
I'm using a MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012) running OSX 10.10 Yosemite, which only has one thunderbolt port for video out. I write code professionally, and wanted to have 2 monitors and my laptop screen to do so. I don't need it to be low-lag, or have super high framerates, but I do need high resolution so I can display lots of text. This adapter does that (at 1920x1080 at 60 FPS as claimed), but not perfectly.

Firstly, you have to download/install drivers from their site, plugging in the adapter without them does nothing. This isn't a problem for someone like me, but may confuse new users, especially people who are used to Macs, since most Mac hardware is plug-and-play with no custom driver installs. On the plus side, the drivers were updated last week, which means they're being actively worked on, so the bugs I'm about to mention may be resolved later on with new drivers.

    On to the bugs:
If you want to do triple-monitors on a Macbook Air, you'll need to plug in this adapter AFTER you plug in the thunderbolt adapter, or the drivers freak out, use 100% CPU, and your framerate becomes terrible with visible tearing and artifacting. Fortunately, when waking up from sleep this doesn't become an issue, and it takes 2 seconds to unplug/replug if you do it wrong.

Other than that, by far the biggest bug is that Mission Control (which I use constantly to switch windows) does not get along with the adapter. When it's plugged in, Mission Control causes the screen to freeze for 3-5 seconds before showing you the overview, though this can be significantly cut down if you run
    defaults write com.apple.dock expose-animation-duration -float 0
in a terminal. This removes the animation at the start and end of Mission Control, though, which makes finding windows slightly harder, but makes mission control launch in a sane amount of time.

Also, if you want to use the adapter-connected monitor as your main monitor, the menubar loses transparency and can lose all its text, though it is still functional. Additionally, some applications (specifically Intellij Idea) don't like it when you use the adapter-connected monitor as your main, though they will run fine and display fine on that monitor if it's set up as a secondary.

There is also the minor issue of antialiasing not working in Mission Control, meaning text looks weird in the overview. Also, 10.10's new transparency stuff is glitchy and causes some weird colorations and small black/white squares sometimes, but you can disable it to remove this effect. [EDIT:] I have discovered that disabling transparency significantly improves performance of apps on the connected monitor. The setting is under System Preferences->Accessibility->Display->Reduce Transparency.

Lastly, though it does claim to be 60FPS (and looks like it actually is) there is a slight lag (maybe 3 or 4 frames) on the picture. For work, this is not an issue, but if you're wanting to use it for gaming (especially with a single game spanning two monitors), it would be very noticeable and problematic. The adapter gets warm while in use, which leads me to believe that there's some sort of processing going on, which is probably causing the lag, so this may not be something the driver updates could fix.

I have two 43" Samsung smart TVs but only one HDMI port on my laptop Acer Nitro5 (AN514-54). I was able to plug in this adapter to my USB 3.0 port and an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV. My second monitor connected immediately. The highest resolution I can select for the second monitor is 1920x1080 but at least I'm connected and I can extend across both screens (3 if I leave my laptop open). I have an NVidia GTX 1650 graphic card and have no problems since I connected this two weeks ago. No scrambling, pixelation or anything. Very happy with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tenía dudas, funciona muy bien, no me ha dado ningún problema

Easy to download the displaylink software. After that, everything was plug-and-play. Bought it to be able to use 2 external monitors for my M1 macbook pro. So far no lag or other weird behaviour from the displaylink monitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfekter Ersatzausgang für eine MacBook Pro (Early 2011) mit hardware-deaktiviertem Graphikchip
Reviewed in Germany on June 29, 2021
