Honest Review of Yamaha FC4A Assignable Foot Pedal

Product Description
Yamaha FC4A Assignable Piano Sustain Foot Pedal
Top Brand: YAMAHA
From the manufacturer

Yamaha FC4A Sustain Pedal
A foot pedal for use with digital pianos, keyboards, synthesizers, and stage pianos. This pedal offers a feel close to that of the pedal on an acoustic piano.

Important - Switching polarity on your pedal
Note:
If a sustain pedal plugged into a Yamaha keyboard is producing the opposite effect - sustaining when the pedal is not depressed, and not sustaining when it is depressed - it's usually because (a) the pedal was plugged in while the keyboard was turned on, or (b) the pedal was depressed while the unit was powering on. This tricks the keyboard into thinking the default state of the pedal is depressed, resulting in a reverse polarity or reverse function. There's an easy way to remedy this:
1) With the unit turned on and the sustain pedal plugged in, depress and hold the sustain pedal while you power the unit off.
2) Release the sustain pedal once the unit has been turned off.
3) Turn the unit back on.
If that doesn't solve the problem and further troubleshooting is needed, please contact our Support team here.

Compatible with assignable switch functions
Compatible with assignable switch functions, allowing the player to call up the desired function or setting just by depressing the pedal. Just one pedal broadens the range of performance.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2025I’ve been using the Yamaha FC4A sustain pedal with my digital piano, and honestly, it’s pretty solid. It feels close to an acoustic piano pedal—smooth and responsive, with a rubber bottom that keeps it from sliding around. Works great with my Yamaha keyboard and even my synth. One hiccup: it doesn’t have a polarity switch, so I had to mess with the power trick to fix the reverse sustain issue (pain in the butt, but it worked). It’s not the heaviest pedal, so it might shift a tad during wild sessions. Still, for the price, it’s a reliable little champ!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2025Very happy with my new sustain pedal for my piano! Works very well and easy to assemble. I love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024Right after I plugged in the Yamaha FC4A sustain pedal, the improvement was obvious. It feels just like an acoustic piano pedal—smooth, responsive, and natural. The build quality is solid, and it stays firmly in place, even during long practice sessions. If you’re looking for a reliable, high-quality sustain pedal for your digital piano, this is it. It has truly elevated my playing experience, and I couldn’t be happier with this purchase. Highly recommend!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2024Just as Yamaha arguably makes the best digital pianos, this is probably the best piano style sustain pedal available. Super quiet and smooth with nice tacky rubber pads on the bottom to help prevent sliding. One small design flaw though, which I believe is with most of these style pedals. If you're pushing the pedal all the way back against a wall or some other hard surface, the wire coming out the back will hit the wall before the casing of the pedal does, possibly eventually causing damage to the wire. I was able to remedy this by attaching a 99 cent store adhesive felt furniture pad on the bottom of the pedal on the back which extends out farther than the wire which prevents the wire from hitting the wall. See photos.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2023Love the quality of this pedal, but have to mention that out of the box, this pedal worked OPPOSITE- Pedal UP- Sustain- Pedal Down- No Sustain. Holding the power button down while pressing the pedal down did NOT work at first. What I had to do was pull the power brick out of the wall FIRST. Then, I simply plugged it back in, powered up, and VOILA- the pedal went back to its default and PROPER setting- Pressing the pedal DOWN gives sustain, and letting it up has NO sustain. I wish these details were indicated in the paper work that is enclosed, that is mostly useless and in Chinese? Japanese? Otherwise this is an EXCELLENT pedal, and am sure will last for a long long time!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021This pedal is worth every penny! The set up is seamless and quite self explanatory. There are no creaks or weird/unwanted noises from the pedal when it pumped while playing. It’s build quality is exceptional, and stays put on the carpet really well. It doesn’t seem to be made of that cheap, lightweight plastic a lot of the universal pedals are made with. It’s got some weight to it’s base and the pedal itself is weighted quite well so that you do have to put a considerable amount of pressure on it to get it to go down, which is perfect for those of us enthusiastic players! It is not equipped with a Polarity Switch but in my opinion, it doesn’t need one. I own a Yamaha PSR-EW300 and as soon as it was out of the box and plugged in, it worked right away. If you are using it with another brand of keyboard I’d do more research into what pedal would work best for your board and if you’d need one with a Polarity Switch. This pedal is a little bit more pricey than some of the other pedals, after taxes and everything it costed me $31.34 but it’s worth that extra $5 to $10 as it will definitely last longer than majority of the cheaper quality pedals and the sound quality is better as well. Just as a side note, I did receive my pedal with some sort of sticky stuff stuck to it, but a swipe of some Goo Gone and it was history! Another great Yamaha product!
