The spray gun works really well but there are a few things to note. It has a gate valve at the handle that puzzled me since, one would assume, the trigger controls the flow of everything. It doesn't. The trigger only controls the flow of the texture/mud. If the gate valve is open and it must be for the whole contraption to work, the air is constantly flowing out the center hole of the sprayer end. When you pull the trigger, that moves the internals backwards allowing the mud to flow in, get picked up by the air, and sprayed at the wall. If your air compressors is small, it'll exhaust your air supply very quickly. I would spray a bit, turn the valve off, let it build pressure, then get back at it.
You can adjust the size of the "chunks" coming out of the gun a couple of ways....change out the tip or back the internals out a bit using the knob on the back of the spray gun. I was able to fine tune the smallest tip easily and not have to change it out to a larger tip. The larger tips must be chunking pecan sized globs of texture is all I can think......way to large for me so I'm glad I didn't use them.
Well worth the money. The cans of texture at Lowe's are almost as much as I paid for this gun. Defintely worth it if you'll be using this 2 or more times much less if you use it often. I can't imagine this thing breaking. It's well made and simple. Only complaint is the hopper could probably be bigger but then you'd have a lot of weight to control so maybe that's a good thing.
My first pass put decent texture on the wall, but it ended up being too fine. My second time around I was able to successfully replicate the existing orange peel texture on the surrounding wall so well that in some places I cannot even tell where I sprayed after it dried. So, this sprayer is capable of achieving the desired results, with some practice and understanding the variables involved.
A few tips/notes. First off as several reviewers have mentioned, the connection of the hopper to the gun is pretty poor. It has an o-ring, but I believe it is undersized, and on top of that, the style of hose clamp provided does not allow for concentric clamping, resulting in a "D" shape when you tighten it down. This combined with the undersized O-ring means mud begins leaking through the opening as you are using the tool, and if you're working in a house with finished flooring like I am, this can be a big mess. I ended up going to my local Ace Hardware and just picking up an O-ring with the same diameter but a thicker cross section. The hopper is now very difficult to put on, but once in place (and the O-ring poked into place with a flatblade screw driver since it will try to roll out of the groove), it seals perfectly.
Second, this may be common to all texture guns regardless of price, but once you crack open the air valve, air flows continuously out of the nozzle whether or not you are spraying mud. I have a 6 gallon Dewalt compressor and it doesn't take long before it starts having to cycle on because of the continuous flow of air. You can shut the valve off, but the amount of airflow/CFM through the gun really has a big impact on the consistency of your texture (more air means finer texture atomization) so if you get it exactly where you need it to produce the results you want, you probably won't want to shut it off until you're done. That being said, the tool really only needs to run at 30-40psi so if you have a compressor with a 165psi max like mine, by the time the cut-in pressure is reached you still have a lot of pressure available so you don't have to stop spraying right away. If you're doing assorted patchwork like me, this is even less of a problem because you are probably spraying for a few seconds, then moving to a new spot. If you were doing a whole room of new drywall you will probably want a larger compressor tank. Also be aware as other reviewers have mentioned, the tool does not come with the correct type of quick connect fitting for an air compressor hose, so you'll need to buy one.
I found some pretty good Youtube tutorials for doing texture work. Amount of airflow, thickness of mud, which nozzle you use (the tool comes with 3), distance from wall, and how much you pull the trigger are all variables in the results you will achieve. I used premixed APC that I already had on hand and just added some water to thin it out. I used a drill-powered paint stirrer to mix it but you can even use a stir stick; it will just take longer. Thinner mud means finer texture. I don't recommend extremely thick mud to achieve heavy texture as it won't flow well through the tool, so the other variables should be adjusted instead. I also found that spraying too close to the wall had bad results. I was doing this partly to avoid too much overspray on surrounding areas, but if you get too close the air will blow air bubbles into the wet mud, so you want to be back 18" or more.
As for the airflow, barely cracking the valve open was enough to get me the results I wanted. Full airflow through the gun would result in a very fine mist texture. I also found that pulling the trigger just slightly was enough. Too heavy on the trigger pull puts a lot of mud out very quickly and can result in pooling. This might be good for certain texture effects but not for orange peel. The gun does have an adjustable knob on the back to limit how far the trigger can be pulled (if you just want to hold it to the max and spray continuously) but I found that regulating it by hand was easy enough to get the results I wanted.
Cleaning is one of the easiest aspects of this tool. Take the hopper off, unscrew the nozzle and then just spray everything out with a garden hose. The only place mud actually touches the gun itself is in the "L" shaped passage from the hopper to the nozzle, so there are no difficult to access areas or major disassembly required to properly clean it.
One last thing that would be handy is some kind of stand for the thing. Once filled with mud it is very top heavy and also has no flat surface to sit on, so you basically cannot set it down. This gets even worse when you connect the air hose to it since that comes out of the bottom and makes it even less possible to prop up against something. I plan to make a stand from a coat hanger or maybe some blocks of wood. It's also handy to have a second person who can help hold it while filling, manage the hose, pick up the compressor if you are moving around the house doing various areas, and hold cardboard up as a spray shield if there are places where masking isn't practical, as texture will spray quite far.
Overall I think this tool is a great value for the price but there are some minor issues (the O-ring being the biggest of them). Once you practice a bit you can really get good results.

I learnt that I need to keep the mud reservoir more full because when you spray the ceiling, the spray gun needs to be angled. I suppose an improvement to the design would be to have an angled nozzle or mud reservoir for that purpose. Cleaning of the spray gun is pretty straight forward as the mud I was using could be rinsed out with tap water and a spray hose.
Outside of that, worked great and seems to be least inexpensive option for texturing as long as you have an air compressor.
