    Not long after purchasing this helmet I was involved in a full-speed collision that knocked me backward into the next zip code. I've seen some reviews for the G4 Samurai that say it's light on protection, but let me say for the record that even though the point of contact was mostly my head there was no concussion, and no head injury. The helmet stayed on and did it's job. For a catcher's helmet that is so lightweight and comfortable it offers excellent protection!

    The bottom straps on the back of the mask are not elastic, so it takes a little extra effort to pull the mask off. This can be annoying at game speed, when I have to find a pop up behind the plate. Otherwise it’s comfortable and feels safe.

    Got it for my husband who umpires. He took a ball to the jaw/ear with a traditional mask, lucklily no damage, but it was a foul tip HS JV, if it was a higher level, it could have done some serious damage.

    So, I said more protection required...he picked this. A few days after getting it he came home and told me about a ball to the facemask. He said everybody was freaking out making sure he was ok, he said he barely felt it as the padding in the helmet absorbed basically the entire blow. He was sold!

    If you are a concerned parent or spouse of a catcher, or umpire, this is what you buy for them. Promise, you will rest easy, at least in this aspect.

    The helmet that came with his catcher's set was wonderful. It finally started falling apart, but he was full-time catcher for 3 years with it. Replaced it with the same helmet he had, it did not even last a year and the padding started falling out. He's not even a full-time catcher any longer. Just bullpen for his HS.
