Time Saver - I love it!!!
I make a lot of homemade chicken broth/stock. I used to put my broth/stock in the refrigerator for a couple days until the fat floated to the top so I could skim it off and move on with my life. And that was fine if I didn't need to use it right away... but now, thanks to the OXO Good Grips 4-Cup Fat Separator, I am saving so much time because I can immediately separate the fat from my broth. This product not only does what is says it will do, but it's easy to use, extremely effective, and simple to clean. I only regret I didn't buy one sooner! I would recommend this to friends and family. Thank you OXO, for this quality product and for saving me so much time in my broth/stock making endeavors!

    Like so many others, I really like this fat separator. It works especially well for crock pot dishes that end up swimming in broth and it makes the whole grease-less gravy-making process so much easier.

    The secret is in the stopper. Make sure the stopper is firmly inserted before pouring the meat juices into the cup. I have found the strainer on top to be just right in that it keeps big chunks of meat or skin out of the cup but doesn't strain it enough to cause problems by getting clogged and causing overflows. If I find myself with too much solid matter in the broth, I just add a step: after the fat has floated to the top and I'm ready to pour out the stock, I remove the stopper and pour the broth through a finer sieve into whatever container or pan I'm going to use to make gravy, soup, whatever.

    Now, I have a helpful hint: Never, ever grind up the stopper in your garbage disposer! While it is a "magic stopper" it isn't indestructible. But, if you should happen to destroy or lose your Magic Stopper do not fear. All is not lost! I found a listing for a wine bottle stopper:

    It's called a "Metrokane 6119 Rabbit Wine Bottle Stopper". (I posted a link above to it's listing here, on Amazon, but apparently that got edited out.) It's made of silicone and stainless steel and will fit snugly in the spout of this product. I also use one as a stopper for the bottle of olive oil we use regularly - it fits and the oil doesn't leak all over the outside of the bottle as it does when putting the screw cap back on.

    While I managed to catch my stopper *before* it was completely obliterated, my little near-accident caused me to think about what might happen if I lost it or my husband threw it away or something equally horrific occurred. I wondered how hard it would be to get a replacement stopper and, having just bought a pack of these for (of all things) wine, I thought I'd try it out just in case. It works.

    Now I'm off to look for a smaller version of this thing since I cook mostly for just two people I find that this 4 cup unit is not as efficient as it could be for smaller volumes of liquid.

    This is the second time I've ordered one like this. Its works great and does exactly what its meant to do. The cons are so minor and I highly recommend it

    If youre trying to decide between this one and the kind with the hole at the bottom and handle, here's my opinion.

    Spout Separator
    Pros
    It's perfect for someone who would use it a lot. Works great and durable. You don't have to worry about things breaking and needing to replace it. You never run the risk of not being able to stop the sauce from pouring out.
    Cons
    When the sauce gets low, a little oil comes out when you pour. Depending on how you pour, you may need to wait for the oil to separate again. You can't get all the gravy when it starts getting low.

    Lever Separator
    Pros
    You do get less oil because the hole is at the very bottom. So you dont have to worry about getting oil when you pour. You can get every last drop since all the oil stays at the top.
    Cons
    If you plan on using it a lot, it will break. I prefer this kind, but I've gone through so many its just not worth it. I've tried every make and the handles all end up breaking.
    The sauce will come pouring out then the handle gets stuck and won't close. Its also harder to clean.

    I've had one of these for many years. I figured out that you have to put the stopper in the spout before you add the liquid. The pressure from the stopper keeps any liquid from entering the spout. Once the liquid has settled and the fat has floated to the top, remove the stopper and only broth will go in to the spout. I usually wash mine in the dishwasher since it gets pretty greasy inside, but I have also been able to get it clean by hand washing it in hot soapy water and using the included brush to get the spout clean. I would give this product 5 stars but after many years of using it the handle broke. I didn't try contacting OXO for a replacement because I felt like I got my money's worth and it functioned well for 5-10 years.

    This is a great performer when it comes to separating oil from cooking or even salad dressing from bottles.
    However, like I imagine all of them in plastic, it is difficult to clean. Perhaps if it were glass rather than plastic my bottle cleaning brush would be able to clean it thoroughly, however it is a good sturdy plastic. The oil seems to stay sparingly on the plastic in the spout even with hot water. It was priced well and delivered quickly via Prime.

    Many years ago, I had a super cheap, 2 Cup fat separator. It was wonderful. But it was small. It was lost in a move, and since then I have simply put the pan juices in a bowl, cooled and skimmed the fat. What a fool; these Fat Separators are easy to find. This year I sprung for a new pan AND turkey lifter (forks). When this popped up in the suggested items, I though. "What the heck, let's add it too!" Why oh why did I wait so long??? Thanksgiving morning, after lifting my 31# turkey from it's new Calphalon pan, using my new turkey lifters, I poured off all the drippings into my new OXO separator. Well, that's not true. I poured half into it, skimming off the big bits with the hand catch top. The other full quart waited in a Mason jar until this settled a bit. Within about 5-10 minutes, the fat had risen and I skimmed off all I needed to make gravy. I made a quick roux in my new Calphalon pan and then added the skimmed broth with my OXO separator. I then dumped the other quart in and within minutes was able to finish my gravy. It is amazing. I just washed it in the dishwasher and cannot believe I waited this long to buy one. This is such a nicely sized, well made product. As always with OXO, the handle is comfortable and simply feels good in my hand. Wonderful product.

    I've had a few gravy separators in the past and none have been entirely satisfactory and a common problem has been the plastic cracking with use. I have the smaller size (2-Cup) version of this jug and as it has performed well (and hasn't cracked with hot fat over time) I got this larger size for larger quantities of liquid. I also use the separator for collecting liquid from my juicer as some fruits, pineapple in particular, create a foamy liquid at first, but, on standing the clear juice sinks to the bottom and a layer of foam rises to the top. This separator jug is ideal for drawing off the clear liquid leaving the foam behind.

    These jugs have a good, comfortable handle that doesn't slip and they dish-wash with no problems.
