WALD
Wald bicycle baskets, racks, and fenders provide simple solutions to a complex global problem and can help you make the world a better place. Installing a bicycle basket allows you to bring home gallons of milk instead of burning through tanks of gas and drums of oil.
Wald strives to make products the majority of cyclists can use on their bicycles and become more functional at the same time. The biggest challenge we face in this effort is the lack of a universal standard. Bikes from various manufacturers may look the same, but the moment you pull out a tape measure it quickly becomes apparent that all bicycles are not created equal. While we believe our products can be installed by almost anyone, we recommend you have your local bike shop install your product at the time of purchase.
Be an Integral Part of Our Legacy
Bicycle baskets were not the first product Wald invented. Rather, it was a bicycle tire repair tool. But it didn’t take long for Grandpa Ewald and Uncle Herman to recognize what a difference the bicycle basket could be.
Nobody quite remembers exactly when or why, but one day Grandpa Ewald and Uncle Herman decided it was time to move on. The little shop Wald Cycle Company grew up in served the brothers well. The people of Sheboygan, Wisconsin loved their two-wheeled citizens, but Grandpa and Uncle Herman needed something new. A new product idea was always welcome, but this itch needed a bigger scratch. They had greater aspirations for their business.

Yes, if you are buying this basket and already have a bike rack, it is unlikely the designated bolt holes in the rack will line up correctly or even work at all with the included basket hardware. But the structure of the basket itself is very sound, and I found that putting the thing on with a few sturdy zip-ties held the basket on quite well. Either others who used zip-ties put them on incorrectly, or they have one really weird bike rack that doesn't allow you to securely add zip-ties. I used 6 total - two at the front, two at the back, and two in the middle of the basket. It probably would have been fine with just the four. I live in an hilly area where some of the roads are badly paved and others are still the old cobble-stone type. Never had the basket become unstable, and never lost anything out of the basket, either!
I would recommend this product to anyone who was looking for a study basket for their bike.
The only person this wouldn't work for is someone who is looking for a detachable basket - unless you're really creative and figure out a way to attach it with modified hardware that allows for easy release.
The basket is a nice chrome, sturdy but light. It seems to be the same basket as is used with the Wald 198 front basket but without the black vinyl coating (and of course without the mounting hardware needed for a front basket). It was just what I needed except...
...except there is a large mounting hinge on the bottom of the basket. It's quite large, and on my rack it would have required putting the basket far back on the rack so that the hinge would just hang over the back (no place on the back of the rack to use the hinge to help secure the rack) and leave quite a bit of space between the front of the rack and the front of the basket; or I would have had to pry off the hinge and possibly damage the basket in the process.
If you have a rack that allows you to use the hinge to secure the basket to your rack, this is a 5-star basket. Or if your rack is fairly short then you can either jerry-rig something to use the hinge to secure the basket to your rack and/or just use zip ties. Or maybe your rack has empty space in the middle allowing the hinge to not be in the way and you can just use zip ties or hardware you rig up yourself. But if you have a normal-size rack like mine with a flat surface on top so that the hinge is in the way, you'll need to pry off the hinge before you can properly mount the basket on your rack.
I returned the 585 to Amazon and I'm getting another 198 to replace it. The 198 basket also has a few bits on the bottom that might need to be pried off depending on the exact design of your rack, but they're much smaller and the vinyl coating should prevent damage to the basket during the pry-them-off process. Too bad, because the 198 is a lot more expensive (because it comes with mounting hardware, struts and whatnot, since it's designed to be a front basket) but at least I'll be able to get it to work.
Remove the hinge, or better, make the hinge EASILY removable, and this would be a 5-star basket for anyone.
O, and please note that if Amazon is still using the image of this basket that shows it WITH a rack: This item does NOT come with a rack. The Wald racks are sold separately and, apparently, one of them has the exact mounting point designed to mate with the hinge on the bottom of this basket. Darned if I know which one, though.
Update 2013-12-05: It seems that the Wald rack designed to mate with this basket's bottom bracket is the Wald 215.
Update 2013-12-05: I still think the Wald 198 makes a better rear basket because of its nice vinyl coating over the metal. Worth the extra money to me. I'm using a 198 both as a front basket (as designed) and on top of my rear rack on my 1991 Schwinn Crosscut hybrid bike and they continue to work very well for me. No damage or corrosion, the latter due I'm sure to the vinyl coating.
