Our ground was not super smooth. Kinda like a meadow. The agri spreader handled it fine. Good machine. Well made, and designed to get the job done.
Assembly wasn't too bad but you might want to have another set of hands. The unit is pretty large and some of the pieces can be hard to assemble by yourself but I was able to manage. It probably took about an hour.
The spreader worked well and I was able to cover my 2 acre property pretty quickly. It is very sturdy and stable, even going over bumps and hills. The only downside is the front is a bit low with my tractor which makes it harder to get the last bit of fertilizer out of the hopper. I flipped the hitch bracket to the bottom which raised the front up a bit and helped.
Overall, I'm very happy with the spreader and would buy it again.

THOUGHTS: I tried to save money and bought a pull behind broadcast spreader years ago thru Sportsman's Guide. It lasted exactly three uses before falling apart! I got exactly what I paid for. *SIGH* I was a little nervous about buying this Agri-Fab unit as I've read a few bad reviews from owners here and elsewhere. The majority of reviews, however, were positive - plus I still have an Agri-Fab aerating drop spreader that's well over 15yrs old and still holding up. The 45-0463 unit came well packaged in a fairly sturdy box. It was a LOT lighter than I thought it would be. The thing is tightly packed and will take a few minutes to unload. Do yourself a favor and have a large, clutter-free workspace to put this thing together in if you can! Make certain all the listed parts are there first, and read the entire assembly instruction booklet *before* starting. The instructions aren't as detailed as I would've preferred, but I was able to figure it out. (There's also an online video from Agri-Fab, to help make the job easier for those who are less mechanically inclined.) I took my time and was able to tinker it together in less than two hours. A basic socket set will greatly speed the assembly process! Above all: BE PATIENT! A lot of the issues other customers reported would seem to be more from rushing thru things without proper preparation or not following the instructions properly, IMHO. (Like NOT tightening all the hardware until you're instructed to do so!) If something is missing, call Agri-Fab. I had one bolt missing from the vacuum-sealed parts bag. Thankfully I was able to find a suitable replacement in my misc nut & bolts stash.
The assembled unit looks pretty nice, hooks up easily and pulled with zero problems. (A hitch pin w/cotter securing pin comes with the spreader.) The adjustable discharge control unit is a very basic "set it & forget it" affair. I found that a setting right around 4 to 5 did a nicet job of spreading the recommended amount of product. I have a little over nine acres and first put down insecticide to keep fleas & ticks off our dog for the summer, then laid down a good coat of weed & feed right around the house to green up a few thin spots and wipe out the encroaching dandelions. Both products spread nicely; both the fine powdery insecticide AND the coarse grainy weed & feed - with no clumping or binding of the gear box, even with a full (heaping) load on the weed & feed. BTW... the gearbox is enclosed in a heavy black plastic housing, but the housing is held together, clamshell style, with three cotter-style pins for quick easy disassembly & cleaning/lubrication. It should also make replacement of any worn gear drive parts a breeze as well. Be aware that the broadcast spinner works whether going forward or backwards (it just changes direction), but that did not present any functionality issues when I did. Also, if you come to a stop and don't close the trap door beneath the hopper, whatever's in there will continue to trickle (or pour, depending on the setting) onto the spinner plate - potentially giving you an unintentionally huge overdose of chemical when you take off again, if you aren't paying attention. And some commonsense advice: rinse off your spreader after *every* use! That'll go a long way towards making it last a lot longer, plus the painted parts won't rust/corrode/deteriorate as quickly.
No, this Agri-Fab model 45-05463 isn't the world's greatest spreader but for the price it seems to be a solid bargain. In fact, my only real gripe is that the accessories that Agri-Fab sells for this unit, (hopper cover, grate kit & deflector shield), should've been included with it. Oh well. One last thing: the unit is light enough to lift and hang up out of the way on a nail or hook on the wall of your storage shed or garage at the end of the season. Nice.
The first thing to do is read the instructions and take an inventory of all the parts and fasteners using the parts lists in the instructions. One of the complaints of some reviewers were missing parts. My package had all parts and fasteners listed. Another, complaint was the clarity of the instructions.
If you have some basic DIY mechanical skill you should be able to assemble this spreader following the instructions. If you are mechanically challenged, I would suggest that you layout all of the parts and fasteners in an organized display, read through the instructions step by step and group the parts and pieces needed for each step before beginning assembly. A second set of hands will make assembly easier.
During assembly leave the fasteners loose as instructed until directed to tighten them. One issue is inserting plastic plugs to close off the ends of four tubes. I was unable to hammer them into the tubes, in my case they were cold which made them hard. I used a heat gun to warm them making them pliable enough to insert. If you encounter this situation soaking them in hot water should do the same thing.
I gave this unit four stars for ease of use for only one reason, the drop gate lever to me, is challenging to use. When sitting on the tractor and reaching back to the lever controlling the drop gate you have to pull it forward toward the tractor then move it left to unlatch and then release it. To relatch it, pull it forward until it stops then move the lever to the right to latch it. Since the recommendation is to start and stop spreading with the tractor in motion so as to not drop excessive product, this action is done by feel behind your back. Maybe with more use this will be more intuitive.
This comment is directed to Agri-Fab personnel. Although I received all components everything in the shipping box was out of position. The box was beat up and punctured in a few places. The cardboard corners did not keep the tube parts in place, upon delivery the tube parts were rattling and bumping against each other. Somehow, two of the clips holding the gear case together, the spreader shaft clip and an axle clip had been knocked off. Probably caused by the tubes no longer being secured.
Nevertheless, the spreader met expectations, and the three-year warranty is nice too.

You should not use mild galvanised steel bolts, washer, nuts in products tat are exposed to corrosive materials, e.g. fertilizer. The additional cost of stainless steel is negligible and I would be happy to pay the small extra cost. As it is I can see that I will have to replace many of the fixings eventually.
You should supply washers for all fixings on both the hex bolt side & the lock nut side as without these the fixings will penetrate the protective paint on the frame & lead to rusting. I used my own stock of SS washers to achieve this.
On the sweeper I purchased earlier, the nylon wing nuts failed & I had to replace them with metal.
For such good products, you really should aim for quality.
Easy assembly, took about an hour. Read the instructions first, get familiar with the parts (which are diagrammed in the getting started guide), and stick with the guidelines of "don't tighten anything completely until assembly is done" and it'll go smoothly. One review mentions drilling a second hole for a cotter pin on the axle - DON'T do this, only one wheel should have a cotter pin installed, the other should spin freely. There's no differential, so the wheels need to be able to turn independently, which is why one isn't linked to the axle directly.
Similar quality to the previous version with a number of improvements, in particular the flow control which is now accessible without getting off the tractor, although it might require some contortions/reaching. Improved flow gate as well, and a simple adjustment system. Good even spread for fertilizer and grass seed. It's a decent, well-built, lightweight spreader. $320 still feels high for a poly bin, some tubing, and a couple wheels, but it is what it is.
Good buy, we'll see if this lasts another decade.
