Tiger, the Feral Cat Loves It! And After Nearly Three Years, He's Still Lovin' It- Update

Tiger, the Feral Cat Loves It! And After Nearly Three Years, He's Still Lovin' It- Update
I was skeptical at first as to whether the feral cat would enter the cat house -- but he did and he's now a couch potato inside! Our Bay Area winter temp is typically 45-55F, so we're not talking Canada here and the heated bed seems to meet Tiger's needs. I started by getting him used to the pad in our kitchen. Last year, I built a home-made shelter for him and he just didn't use it. I'm guessing that the heated pad in this house has made all the difference. When I first set up the A-frame cat house, under a deck, it got drenched. It's def not made for full outdoor exposure without modification.. The house was easy to take apart and dry off in the sun. After seeing how it is not waterproof, I set up the A-frame on a shelf and tilted it so rain would slough off. I also added a 'rain-fly' and made sure to keep the plastic sheeting away from the cat house--again, so the rain would stay away from the structure. I secured the rain fly/plastic sheets with some extra wood blocks. This has worked well. I'm including a few pics. So far, Tiger, who loves to come inside -- and is very sweet (he intimidates the other cats, so it's best that he stays out whenever possible), is spending a lot of time in his new home. I may do his laundry later today! Soon he'll be wanting room service - but he's had a hard life and this cat house has made his life a little better.Pros: A simple design, easy to clean, easy to take apart, spacious and easy enough to place a rain fly over.Cons: I thought it was a little pricey, it's not waterproof and will drench the insides if exposed to rain. I think it could have been designed a little better to keep the rain away from the two entrances. Also, for the price, it should have come with a rain fly, just like my trusty Coleman tent! After three years, the tent still functions as new. It sits under a deck and is protected from direct weather. One add'l change I made is that I have added a flannel sheet over the heating pad material. I change it regularly and thus keep the heating pad cover clean-ish. I've cleaned the plastic door/windows with automobile plastic lens cleaner. Tiger continues to love his shelter and barely leaves it except to come inside for food -- a big change from his feral hunting days! He now weighs nearly 30 lbs -- and he's happy. The vet says healthy too, so I continue to give his A-frame shelter a thumbs-up.
