Hard to Zero Compact- Fits Keltec P17
1 Star
Hard to Zero Compact- Fits Keltec P17
I don't need a laser for shooting accurately. I've never thought they were very good for that anyway but I like them for other reasons. I don't use red dot sights either. I'm an iron sight shooter.I was looking for a laser that fit the Keltec P17 and would hold zero for months. The maximum depth of a laser for the P17 is 1.80 inches total and 1.20 inches, or less, from the front pic rail slot to the trigger housing, so this one fits; however, the zero is another story.I don't care about the flashlight. I would have preferred not to have one, but there are only a few lasers with the right dimensions, so I decided to give it a try. The laser only sight that Tacticon sells is one of the Chinese ones I had already tried under a different brand name. It failed my tests. This also has a similar design to the other Chinese made lasers I've tried. it uses what I believe to be a 3 point hold--two hex screws and a spring. Generally, that design never zeros well. The other two I had couldn't hold zero past one range trip.Gun management strategy is a very personal issue. There are many good approaches that can be effective for someone. I like to have a laser for shooting out of stance, one handed shooting without iron sight aiming and for shooting while moving. The criminal geniuses that have encouraged me to have guns don't like lasers either. It's a psychological issue with a dot moving around their chest. I don't need dead on accuracy for that, but whatever the accuracy is, it has to be stable over the long term. I can adjust to any drift from center as long as it's consistent.I spent an hour and half zeroing this laser, which is ridiculous. The windage was easy. The elevation is a another problem. Because the laser sits so far below the barrel (2 inches) with the flashlight in-between getting enough elevation to zero the laser at 10 yards is hard to do. I also found that the adjustments weren't precise. A quarter turn of the hex screw produced inconsistent results. In addition, some adjustments of the windage caused changes in the elevation. That's one flaw in the 3 point contact design.I could have used the parallel-to-the-barrel method of zeroing, but the point of aim would have to be 2 inches below my target, and I couldn't have periodically checked the laser zero by using my iron sights. I'm okay with that for situations where I have to use the laser out of shooting position, but that gives the crime lords the idea I'm aiming at their belt buckle instead of at their vital organs. (I suppose I could lower the laser a bit.) The parallel method doesn't require distance adjustments, but the chances I'll need to shoot anything, or anyone, beyond 15 yards with a handgun is very, very remote. Lasers, green or red, are hard to see in daylight at any distance beyond 15 yards, and I want my laser seen! If I had to shoot anything beyond 15 yds, I could use my iron sights. Before I went to the range, I zeroed the laser against my iron sights. At the range, my P17 was shooting 2 inches low with the laser. I tried to move the beam down, but it was very unstable, and the adjustments weren't what I was expecting. I took the elevation screw out twice and reset the laser using the windage screw. Finally, after 90 rounds or so, I reached a point where I felt it was as good as it was going to get.I've attached 3 pictures. One is shooting with iron sights only at 10 yards, the second one is the laser only shooting off the draw a few inches above waist high, and the third picture is my P32 using a TR1 laser that is both accurate and has held its zero for months. I shot the P32 off the draw the same as the P17 using only the laser at 10 yards. This laser is accurate enough to use for center mass shooting up to 15 yards. I haven't tested it at 20 and 25 yards yet. The point of aim at those distances will likely be well above the target center due the steep beam angle adjustment needed to get it to intersect the bullet path at 10 yards. That's one reason laser sights should be as close to the barrel as possible. I like mine to be around 1.15 inches or so below the barrel rather than the 2 inches this one is.It's still off from point of aim about 1/2 an inch low. I don't like it, but I can live with it. If it holds the current settings for months like the P32 TR1, then this laser is a win. If I have to re-zero every couple of weeks, it's gone like the two previous Chinese ones. I'll update when I know the answer to that question. And of course there's the battery life issue also. The TR1 battery is good for 6 to 12 months shooting the P32 every week, but I change the battery every 6 months to make sure it's ready when I need it.After accepting the current adjustments, I used red Loctite 620 on the hex screws and the pic rail screw to prevent movement. If the laser loses its current setting, it's because the laser capsule is not stable and not because the screws keep moving. I could fix the capsule issue by zeroing it and then putting resin in the casing, but that's a bit of tricky work, I don't want to do right now. Even if I used the resin, failing buttons, charging issues and battery failure could still derail this laser for long term use.We shall see!Update: I bought a 2nd one of these for another P17 my wife has. It was as hard to zero as the first one. I've tried 3 times to zero against the iron sights. By the next day the laser was off again without any shooting. Once I thought it had stabilized, I took it to the range. It was shooting two inches above POA. To bring the shots down, I tried to move the beam up, but it would move any higher. I reset the laser a couple of times but couldn't get it to move up. The distance from the laser to the barrel is a major issue for adjusting the elevation. I finally gave up and decided to send it back. Two inches off POA is too much.
