    Great radio
    5 out of 5 stars
    Great radio
I thought it was pretty easy to set up sounded really good. Lots of ability to set up for each mode you use. One exception is the fade control. This is buried in the setup menus and should imo be available on the Home Screen I use this in a camper with outside speakers and this makes it a bit more of a hassle. Also used a external camera with it and found the camera stays on even when the unit is turned off. So it feeds 12v threw the cameras coax when off. I will be installing a switch to cut power to the radio/camera. I realize this was a car stereo and not intended for a camper but when did the stop including mounting brackets? I had to purchase a aftermarket bracket. As well as fabricate a trim piece to finish out the look A great radio Not really for a camper but will work and sound great. Plus it has dvd which is what I originally needed to replace my old unit with.

I've been messing around with car stereo equipment for almost 20 years. I've owned Pioneer, JVC, Clarion, Alpine and now a couple of Kenwood head units over the years. I bought this unit for a couple of different reasons. One, I was wanting bluetooth so that I could have the controls on right there on the unit and two to try out the dvd stuff for trips with my kids. I used a ten dollar bluetooth dongle that hooked in through a 3.5mm stereo jack on the back of my last kenwood stereo and it was a pain, and very unsafe, to switch songs and have to hit play every time I got in my car. I haven't used or tried the dvd player yet but will update as I go.

As for the unit. Hook up and start up are all pretty easy especially if you know stereos. As for the interface, it is fairly easy to get around. There are some features and things that need some instruction and the user manual was just like any other it takes a bit to read and find what you need. I had a little trouble getting the bluetooth to hook up but that was my fault and then the sub wasn't coming through the sound so I had to find a feature I had turned off when you typically make phone calls. Needless to say there's a lot of features that you will have to get used to. Googleing problems are typically easier than looking through the manual. The processing speed and RAM that this has (not sure on the details) makes hitting buttons and moving through pages is a little laggy but it all works pretty easy, it's not like your phone or a tablet and I'm sure there are other more expensive units that would be better/faster if that's what you are looking for. Also I was disappointed that it didn't come with a remote. After looking that was my fault because it's not in the description. But my remote that I had with my previous 9 year old Kenwood stereo work with this one! How lucky was that! It may not work all the features but all I wanted was song change and volume buttons. You can buy a remote for about $26 that I found. I was going to look on ebay for a used remote because if Kenwood's are that compatible over so many years I would think any of them would work.

I have a Samsung J7 and didn't have any trouble, after fixing my mistake, getting bluetooth to work. If I leave my music app open it will automatically link and start playing shortly after powering on which is awesome. I also used the USB port and hooked up a 4gig flash drive and it worked fine. The only problem I have with the phone and it's not really a big deal because I'm sure there's a solution, when I get calls it stops the music and shows up on the screen, you hit answer and I could hear the caller but they couldn't hear me, at all. I finally figured out how to switch from hearing it through the car speakers and solely hearing it through the phone, all is good but I can't figure out how to get that all to work. I figured it would use the phones microphone but apparently it doesn't. Not really a deal breaker but I recently had to make several trips in the car and with not knowing how that all worked I lost a few phone calls and had to tell my wife to use her phone to call the person back. Also another negative is if your stereo is in direct sun light the pictures is washed out. Other times the picture is fine, it looks great. But keep in mind it will depend on what vehicle you are putting this in. With my car's set up the stereo is almost at a upward angle. I've been look at tablet shades that I could stick around the bezel to give it just a little bit of shade in the sun light. I wouldn't take much. But just keep that in mind it is only a color LCD screen. Still the picture is great and even in the sunlight I can make out what buttons I want to push and mainly it's just the next button while driving to hit the next song.

I love music and have recently replaced my factory speakers with new speakers. I also have one 12inch sub that sounds great. The Kenwood stereo that I had before was single din with a USB and 3.5mm stereo jack and worked great. With the sub control I can turn it down without compromising the rest of the sound quality and keep from torturing those that ride in my back seat with bass. This unit has sub control along with a full EQ, I haven't messed around with it a lot but found a preset on it that sounds great, it is the 'Rock' setting. I can tell a little difference in the quality of sound between the old single din Kenwood and this one. I can also tell a difference in the sub level and volume level. These are minor details I won't go in depth but in all it gives a great sound and would do just fine with most cars or trucks. The biggest difference is the sound quality in the bluetooth. As said before a ten dollar dongle plugged into a 3.5 stereo jack in the old Kenwood has a whine to it. The bluetooth connection through this stereo is crystal clear. The music coming from the phone through bluetooth has the same quality as through the USB or CD. It sounds awesome. I look forward to whatching or listening to a movie in the car. It would sound better than my home system I'm sure.

Overall Kenwood in my opinion makes the best stereos. I was looking at all the different kinds you can buy and I wanted something cheap It's not the cheapest but it's not the most expensive either. I got this here on Amazon for $184 and now I think it's around $200 or more. It was a deal I knew I needed to jump on but it's worth the $200 if you want a quality stereo. I was going to buy a Pyle and actually bought one but when it came without a wiring harness I sent it back and I told myself that spending the extra hundred bucks would be worth it in the long run because I know that Kenwood makes a quality product and their ratings in reviews show it. It also has features like back up camera etc. that I may or may not use but in all the sound quality and features for me make it the best choice. Happy stereo hunting!

The Kenwood DDX23BT is exactly what I needed and nearly everything that I wanted.
We have a 2005 Ford Expedition with a hard to use aftermarket radio.
      We needed:
      • Good and reliable BT hands free operation with both Microsoft Windows and Apple iphone.
      • Backup camera viewing
      • GPS capability*
      • Good stereo with CD and MP3 capability
      • Mechanical fit for our 2005 Ford Expedition
      We wanted:
      • Clean and easy to use interface
      • Embedded GPS with traffic integration
      • To spend no more than $500

After trying, and being dis-satisfied with several other brands and models, I made the following observations
      1) Good, embedded GPS that includes traffic integration is a $500+ cost adder. (All)
      2) Most units did not support reliable BT operation with a Windows based phone. (JVC, Blaupunkt)
      3) Some units would not fit well (mechanically) into available 2 DIN adapter face plates that are sold for our 2005 Expedition. (Pumpkin and Pioneer)
I was about to give up, when it occurred to me that maybe we would be better off finding a unit that had everything EXCEPT embedded GPS. One that would link BT audio with our smartphones, and use the guidance apps that we already have on our phones. Considering that smartphone guidance apps (with exception of screen size) are generally superior to those embedded in head units, and that those apps are being incrementally improved at no cost to the user, and that map updates are free. It started to seem like a good idea to look for a head unit sans embedded GPS.
Lo and behold, when I changed my search criteria I found the Kenwood DDX23BT for under $200!
It fit perfectly, gives crystal clear BT operation, works great with both Windows* and iphone GPS and BT phone functions.
I am super happy with this solution…
Here’s my summary of pros and cons. Note that my list of CONs is pretty long. Keep in mind that most of the items in the PRO column are much more important to me than the items in the CON column. The CONs are generally nit-picky wants vs. my more particular needs.

      PRO
      • Direct and accurate fit with METRA 2DIN adapter into our 2005 Ford Expedition
      • Excellent BT interface. Always a reliable and clear connection. Easy to pair Windows and iphone devices.
      • Easy to use interface with large icons and touch screen operation
      • Great automatic back-up camera operation with easy to use “drive viewing” function. (Great when hauling a trailer and you want to see what’s going on back there.
      • Excellent sound and microphone configurability. Allows you to optimize for your vehicle and setup.
      • Looks good. Not a lot of fluff and flashing or color shifting lighting to distract you from actually driving your vehicle…. Some of the units I tried looked like a circus in our dashboard.
      • Auto dimmer function for when headlights are turned on.
      • Integrates seamlessly with smartphone for GPS guidance. Plays voice commands clearly through just front, or all speakers… your choice.
      • GREAT value at under $200 !
      CONS
      • No mute button? This is curious to me as every other radio I tried had a single push on/off mute button. Pretty handy when pulling up to the fast food service window… Curiously lacking on this radio.
      • About 5 to 10 seconds after starting the vehicle, the sound level increases significantly. No idea why. I looked for a firmware update that might fix this and did not find any.
      • BT Phone search function is weak. Only searches on first letter, and is very slow to respond.. Flashed a “wait” message even when just trying to scroll. Too slow to be useful.
      • *Does not support Windows Cortana voice command functions.
      • User interface graphics are not my favorite. I prefer simple button icons vs. what look like pencil sketches. Just my preference.
      • Okay… this is SUPER minor… but here it is. The lighting of the HOME button at night does not illuminate the “ME”… so all you see is “HO”.
(I am hoping that a firmware update with knock some of the items off of the CON list)

All said and done, I am very happy with the performance and value of this product. It does everything that I need, most everything that I want… and at a great price point.
      Nicely done Kenwood!
