The only bad thing we found was that, unfortunately, she dropped it and it kind of broke apart and the button that turns on the light ended up inside the unit so we had to get a new one :(
other than that, it's totally worthwhile.
This is a really nice magnifying glass for the price. It is lightweight and easy to hold, but the stand is amazing. It is light weight but secure enough that the magnifying glass doesn't tip forward. The legs are adjustable so you can make it the perfect height. I do with this was slightly higher magnifying power . . . 5 - 7 x would have been perfect for me and 4x is slightly low. It also has distortion around the edges due to not being actual glass. I find that I wiggle and move my head to see clearly at times. Which is not entirely a bad thing as it helps me remember to move and not get stiff after hours of work!
I had a hard time finding a rechargeable magnifying glass but this one works without a hitch. I can use it for hours in the evening, and then plug it in and it is ready the next day. I haven't had a time that the power ran out.
I do like the power switch also -- it is a wheel that twists on easily and also adjust the light level.
It comes with a cleaning cloth and storage bag. Worth the price!
Enter the MagniPros Rectangular Lens Dimmable LED Handheld Magnifier w/Rechargeable Battery. The 1st thing you should know: this ain’t your father’s or grandfather’s old-style magnifying glass that you used to use for coin- or stamp-collecting. It doesn’t have a real glass lens enclosed in a solid metal frame like they used to make back in the day. That’s good & bad.
The Bad: This magnifier’s plastic housing & acrylic lens give it the feel of yet another one of those cheap, Chicom-made products that we’ve all encountered at one time or another. It doesn’t feel very substantial or durable in your hand. And to be sure, you don’t want to drop it on today’s new-style wood or tile floors. If you do, you’re likely going to be ordering a new magnifier to replace the one that just broke.
The Good: This magnifier is actually easier to use & more functional than your dad/granddad’s magnifying glass because its wide rectangular lens is framed w/10 dimmable LEDs, allowing you to both fully magnify & fully illuminate the object or content that you want to see more clearly. And the low-energy usage of the LEDs means that the internal battery doesn’t have to be recharged very often. This simple tool possesses several features that I really like as outlined below.
Magnification: My unit’s 4X (400%) magnification, combined w/LED lighting, makes getting a clear view of almost any typeface, especially fine-print alphanumeric characters, quick & easy.
Distortion: The magnifier is said to have an “optical-grade lens for distortion-free viewing”. I don’t know about “optical-grade”. Even after cleaning the lens w/the included soft cloth, I can still detect some distortion in the acrylic lens, but it’s not significant enough to materially affect my ability to make out fine-print characters. You can always move the lens to a slightly different position to gain a clearer view.
Horizontal Lens: The large, wide-shaped, rectangular lens (4.35” W x 2.65” H) simulates the way we naturally read (from left-to-right) & magnifies a significantly larger coverage area than conventional round handheld magnifiers. MagniPros states that its magnifier is a useful aid for those w/macular degeneration (MD). Although I don’t have MD, my eyes don’t pick up as much light as they once did; so, this large, fully-lighted horizontal lens is quite helpful when attempting to read fine print, especially in low-light environs.
Brightness: With 10 energy-efficient SMD (Surface Mounted Device/Diode)-type ‘ultra-bright’ LEDs, this magnifier is very bright when turned to its highest dimmable setting. SMDs are newer/better technology than the older 1st-gen DIP (Direct-in-Line Pkg.) LEDs. MagniPros states that the SMD LEDs it uses are 30% brighter (w/a peak of 600 lumens) than traditional DIP LEDs, although they’re not as bright (in lumens/watt) as the newer COB (Chip-On-Board) technology, which has more diodes than SMD.
Dimmable: The dimmable light switch wheel mounted in the side of the handle allows you to adjust the brightness level from 0-100%. After 3 weeks of use, I’ve found that I typically dial-up the brightness to only about 30%. On occasion, I require additional light, but most of the time, ~1/3 brightness is all I need to clearly see the small print or object that I’m magnifying. Having said that, the 10 LEDs can be dialed up to the max to provide enough light that the unit can even double as a temporary flashlight in a pinch. And I used it for exactly that just last weekend when we experienced a brief power failure.
Evenness: The LEDs surrounding the magnifier’s frame emit light via a semi-transparent reflector, creating a more evenly lit viewing area & making this unit well-suited for nighttime book reading & other low-light applications.
Longevity: The MagniPros’ SMD LEDs consume up to 50% less energy than older DIP LEDs, helping batteries last up to 2x longer. MagniPros reports these LEDs can last up to 100k hrs. or 20yr without burning out or overheating. But, again, SMD LEDs aren’t as energy efficient or heat efficient as newer technology COB (Chip on Board) LEDs.
Rechargeable: The rechargeable 700mAh battery w/USB (Universal Serial Bus) connector is a big deal to me, because I despise having to feed electronic devices w/batteries. Battery costs add up over time, & replacing them when they die always seems to come at inopportune times. MagniPros says that the device can be recharged in about 2 hrs. & that the charge will last up to 12 hrs. in medium brightness mode. I’ve used my magnifier several times/day for several weeks, almost always w/the aid of the LED lights, & I haven’t had to recharge it yet. There’s a charge status light located to the left of the micro-USB charging port at the base of the handle. It illuminates red while charging & later turns green when the unit is fully charged.
Housing: This magnifier comes in a cheap plastic case. On the plus side, though the unit is relatively large for a handheld magnifier, it’s fairly light at a reported 6½ oz. The lens’ plastic frame & handle, combined w/a shatter-‘resistant’ acrylic anti-glare lens, results in a handheld magnifier that’s light & easy to hold, especially when compared to some of the old-school handheld magnifying glasses, whose lenses were actually made of GLASS. But the magnifier’s weight is a non-issue w/me, as I don’t use it to read books or mags. But for those who might wish to use it for extended reading, the magnifier’s relatively light weight could be important.
Color: I’ve always liked Business Black at home & at work. To me, black looks more professional than any other color. So, I like that the case is black, even if it is plastic. It comes w/plastic silver (faux chrome) trim which I could live without. But I’m sure, for some folks, the case is more aesthetically pleasing w/the silver trim.
Packaging: The magnifier comes in a clear plastic case in a tight-fitting cardboard box. The acrylic lens is protected on both sides w/removable clear plastic film to prevent the lens from scratching during shipment. Included in the pkg. is a MagniPros-branded light gray cleaning cloth & a MagniPros-branded stitched, light gray protective storage pouch w/drawstring. Also included is a color foldout quick-start instruction card showing how to remove the lens’ protective film, how to charge the magnifier, how to operate the dimmable light switch, & at what height you should hover the magnifier over objects/content (3-5½”) for best viewing. For those seeking more info, there is also a reference to multiple YouTube instructional videos. Just type: “MagniPros ED14” in the YouTube search box to view 1 or more of the short video tutorials.
Design/Mfr.: The unit was reportedly designed in California but made in China.
Warranty: MagniPros’ website shows a short 45-day return/refund window w/a $10 restocking fee, which is about 35-40% of the price of a new handheld magnifier like mine, depending upon which model you buy. But if you register your product at their website (w/in 30 days of purchase), you can extend your warranty to 2 yrs. Or you can join MagniPros’ VIP Club for a free extended 2-yr. warranty, as I did.
Bonuses: If you provide an honest product review, Magnipros is currently offering a 2nd unit free in appreciation for your evaluation. Another option is to post a comment &/or photo on Facebook or Instagram to receive a $20 MagniPros gift card towards the purchase of another magnifier.
Contact/Support: MagniPros US customer service is based in South El Monte, CA in the San Gabriel Valley (L.A. County). They can be reached by toll-free phone, email, or via messaging during regular business hrs. I recently submitted an email query to customer service on a Mon. at noon & didn’t receive a return email until midnight on Wed. evening. So, customer service took 2½ days (~60 hrs.) vs. their promised 24 hrs. to respond to a simple question that required no research on their part. Still, the response I received was courteous & professional & it addressed my question. In fairness, Mon. was a federal holiday, but very few private businesses are ever closed on Columbus Day. If MagniPros was closed, it wasn’t posted on their website.
One Concern: The specs for the device I ordered indicated that my unit was a 4X (up to 400%) magnifier. In fact, the only rechargeable handheld 'non-page' magnifier MagniPros currently shows on their website is a 4X magnifier. But the sealed box in which the unit was packaged is printed w/a description that states my device is only a 3X (up to 300%) magnifier. It’s disappointing to receive a device in a box w/printed specs that quotes 25% lower magnification than I paid for. Although it’s possible that this was an honest mistake, it feels a bit like a bait-&-switch. Update: after emailing MagniPros' customer service about this discrepancy, MagniPros apologized that their supplier was packaging new-model magnifiers (that reportedly offer 4X/400% magnification) in the previous model's boxes (which cite 3X/300% magnification on the boxes' exterior). This is confusing for the customer at best. It should be noted that another knowledgeable reviewer stated that he compared MagniPros' new 4X magnifier w/his existing, higher-end 4X magnifier & found that the MagniPros didn't achieve its claimed 4X magnification. I haven't independently verified the actual magnification specs of the device. Although I do believe that MagniPros device magnification should match the specs advertised by the seller, I also understand that, in general, you get what you pay for. As the MagniPros is clearly a lower-end acrylic lens magnifier, whether it actually produces 3X or 4X magnification isn't a deal breaker for me. Either way, it meets my needs.
Bottom Line: This magnifier does what I need it to do & what the seller promised it would do. Of course, if there are any failures or durability issues that surface later, as a few 1- & 2-star reviewers have complained, then I’ll update my review at that time. For now, I’m very happy w/this device.
