Great inexpensive DAC
This is a great inexpensive DAC! I have a Schiit Modius in the house and needed something to use on my Linux box out in my shop. This fits the bill perfectly. Linux Mint recognized it immediately. Couldn't be happier with purchase.

This is my favorite computer related purchase in years. Love it!
Evidently the sound card portion of my HP PC went out, all efforts to revive it by changing settings failed so I had no audio output from any source.
I bought this DAC hoping for an easy, simple work-around for this issue. Here's what happened:
Opened the box, unrolled the cable supplied.
Plugged cable into unit and into an open USB port on the ailing PC.
Confirmed my desk speakers were turned on and "live" (buzzing sound when touching their audio input cable).
Plugged my desk speakers into "headphone" output on DAC.
Opened a video interview on my browser and clicked on the "speaker icon" to enable sound.
Sound played immediately from desk speakers.
Sound is clear, very good volume and no "static" as was the case with old internal sound card.
(i could hear the CPU faintly running in the background with original internal sound circuitry)
"Plug and Play" REQUIRED ABSOLUTLY NO SET UP OR CHANGES TO "SETTINGS" IN PC!
An amazing device- I highly recommend! Good build quality and low price as well. Perfect!
An "instant" PC repair for around $20

I wanted to connect my Linux box to a digital receiver. This device works great for delivering stereo PCM over S/PDIF, and the built-in Linux audio drivers support it. Coax and optical both work (simultaneously).

Various pieces of documentation are split on whether 5.1 output is supported. I can report that mine enumerates configurations for 5.1, and my receiver reports receiving a 5.1 data stream when one of these is active.

I tried the analog outputs briefly, and they sound fine to my ear. I haven't listened for DAC quality because I won't be using it that way.

The product photos show a "power indicator", but I think that's just a hole to expose bleed-through from the TOSLINK emitter, which seems to be always on, even if you choose a non-digital config. Hey, it works!

There are configurations which include "mono microphone", even though none of the documentation mentions such a feature -- I didn't try this, so while the USB sound chip almost certainly supports it, I don't know if it works on this device.

The packaging is minimal. There's a tiny booklet written in broken English, and I can't figure out what some of the sentences are even intended to mean. There are (minor) contradictions between the product listing, the tech support answers here, the booklet contents, and the front of the box. Don't buy this if you expect a high quality manual.

In software, it reports itself as "C-Media Electronics Inc.", with the C-Media vendor ID. This is a C-Media chip, on a board with a couple connectors, in a little metal box. That's not necessarily bad (or good), but that's all it is.

It's a nice (and cheap) little box for bus-powered USB to stereo S/PDIF. For 5.1, you may want to use HDMI audio to avoid compression. For analog, you may want a nicer DAC, a hardware volume control, and a full-sized headphone jack. There's really only one use case where I'd choose this device, but for that one use, it works great.

UPDATE (2025): This is still going strong, and it does everything it claims to. After having used it for a while, I think the connector layout is not ideal. I would have preferred input (USB) on one side, and output (everything else) on the other, though that might have made it a little bigger. I also would have liked a standard size for modular use, like 1/4" width of a 1U rack. It does easily fit in that space, but with the odd connector placement, and no mounting points, you're on your own. It's not at all a bad device, but I'd call this a missed opportunity. Still, great value, and no issues with normal operation.

Bought this to use with a PS5 and Astro A40 TR headset with Mixamp because the PS5 does not have an optical port like the PS4 did.

I followed a YouTube video that goes into detail about how to set it up.
The connection path is basically: PS5> this DAC > Astro Mixamp > Astro A40

No need to buy the $40 Astro HDMI adapter, which greatly limits quality. All the cables you need are included with your mixamp and this DAC. You need nothing else but that YouTube video and about 30 minutes.

I'll be honest though. When my A40s give out, I will buy a different headset and not an Astro A50 or another A40. There are just too many cables to deal with and I prefer a neater, less cluttered setup. Plus, every time I turn on the PS5 for the first time or restart the PS5, I have to re-configure the audio and mic output/inputs. Annoying, but not a big deal as you can quickly do this from the PS5 dashboard directly instead of going to Settings.

The DAC is about the size of 2 decks of playing cards stacked on top of each other. It is very lightweight and it could probably be mounted to the side of the PS5 with double-sided mounting tape. No heat issues from the DAC even after hours of gaming.

For being a source for getting USB audio it works great for about a week, but that's about it. Sound quality is nothing to write home about, but at $25 it's not too bad and probably as good as most motherboard/laptop onboard audio solutions. (Do not purchase if you are looking for an upgrade from these sources) Mainly returned it because I was having issue's with my headphones and speaker audio, sometimes the left or right channel would cut out and would have to adjust or re-plug in those devices to get the audio to work properly again. Maybe it was just my unit having this issue, but just something to note and will probably be getting a better quality solution next time.

I am using this external sound card on Linux Mint 21.2 for sending digital audio from a USB port to my Behringer MS40 amplified speakers via a TOSLINK digital link. Wonderful sound! This unit is versatile : sends output to RCA (analog) or TOSLINK/coaxial (digital). Not too expensive, great buy ! I have briefly tested the analog output (through RCA) and it worked fine although the sound was loud. But that can be adjusted with your operating system.

    Buy with confidence!

Since my home theater receiver has both Fiber Optic | S/PDIF and Coaxial (single dark yellow cable) connections, I bought this unit so my computer running Daphile could connect to my amp with the highest-possible signal quality. This does the job perfectly, the sound is fantastic compared a lead from the headphone jack to 2 x RCA audio plugs. Great sense of airiness and positioning in the music, really articulate. Strongly recommended.

Uses one Cmedia CM108B audio chip. Should support 44.1/48KHz receive/transmit. Dac is 16 bit. Headphone out port is cheap looking with sound as per with mobile phones. RCA out does not sound good, very thin with no low end at all. This could be because of cheap ports. Works fine as a stand-alone USB to SPDIF converter to feed powered speakers, sounds better than analog feed from mobile or laptop.

I bought this to increase the sound in my headphones because I'm deaf in one ear and it really helped to increase the sound of peoples voices. I work for a call center and had trouble hearing people. My only problem I have is that it has a built in sound card and it has a mic in the chip why not add a mic input. Other than that this thing is great.
