Not great, but good.
4 Stars
Not great, but good.
This review written after nearly a year of ownership.Installation - The system has everything you need except the adapters for your particular vehicle, very complete. I mounted this in a 2013 Smart ForTwo Passion and it went as easy as any I've done. There were no clearance issues or odd non-standard dimensions. A Scoche dash kit worked well, mounting to the unit and dash easily and giving a clean, almost factory look. I can't think of anything I would have wished for in addition to what already came in the kit.Sound - Very good clean power. I am powering a set of Pyle 2-way component speakers (6.5 + 1) in front and 3-way Scoche 6x9s in the back. This unit pushes them all to uncomfortable levels and does so relatively cleanly. "Relatively" being key there. For an integrated amp using cheap speakers it isn't bad at all. No one is going to mistake it for a high quality system, but its a pretty good satisfaction to dollar ratio.Screen - Bright (or dim if you prefer) and good resolution. The auto dimming feature doesn't work quite as well as you would hope, but having a always-there soft button to toggle is handy. At times text can be a little small, but turning on the accessibility option to triple-tap the screen for instant zoom takes care of this problem. Glare never seems to be a problem, though I'm sure the angle in the dash and surrounding structure might have something to do with that. Doesn't seem to pick up fingerprints bad at all. The touch accuracy is pretty good, but I suspect any shortcomings in that department is a function of my viewing angle more than the touch sensors' inaccuracy.Function - This is the weak point of the system. It seems there's good and bad in everything.OS - It's Android with Play Store, so being able to choose your own apps is good. However, it is an older OS so some of the apps you'd wish for won't install, which is bad. The 'stock' apps are adequate to get you going, which is good. Most of them aren't great, which is bad, but they're easily replaceable, so not so bad.Responsiveness - Switching between apps is slow and ponderous. It is soul-crushing. So that is bad. However, once the app you're looking for is up and running the screen is fairly responsive, so that's good. There is a "Speed Up" function implemented in the widget drawer that probably kills background apps and frees up memory/CPU, and it does at times seem to be useful, but in then end the main problem isn't with background apps, it is just under powered CPU/RAM, pure and simple.FeaturesThe screen mirror for use with your phone worked well and as expected and setup with my Moto X4 was dead simple, so that's good. But I find that I don't use it nearly like I thought I would since it turns out that trying to get a phone involved instead of just using locally installed apps is just too cumbersome, so that's bad.Having the backup cam function built into the system and be on an electronic trigger instead of having to be selected in software is good, but when the backup cam is in use the audio controls don't work, which is bad. I start to back up and the audio suddenly starts playing too loud, I have to switch out of reverse to mute, then back into reverse. Annoying. The IR gesture system is way rad and works better than expected, so that's good. But because it is so close to the steering wheel many of the functions got set off accidentally ALL THE TIME so I ended up having to disable most of them, which is bad. I can only use the spinning motion because it doesn't look like any other motion that would be normally happening in the car, which is bad, but the physical buttons along the bottom of the screen take care of most of the functions that I'd use gestures for anyway, so that is good. Those buttons are a great addition to the radio. They seem to go against the idea of a touchscreen software-based system, but they are not because it allows you to take care of common functions without having to look at the radio. Great.Having all the extras like wifi antenna, GPS antenna, remote mic, etc. greatly increases the installation time and how much of the car interior I had to take apart, which is bad. But in the end these extras, which could have been integrated into the unit and weren't strictly necessary, seem to enhance their particular functions. Things would have sucked worse without them, so that's good that they are included despite the extra effort involved.Problems - There have only been two problems, and only one of those problems has been consistent. That one problem isn't a major one, just majorly annoying. All the other 'problems' could be considered quirks and annoyances (as noted above) rather than actual problems. The one consistent problem I have is, on all the audio functions except radio, is that there will be a drop in the 30s to 3 minute range after start for a few seconds. It is like there is some process suddenly kicking in and taking up 100% of the CPU at top priority so there is nothing left for the apps doing the audio. I presume the radio isn't affected because the radio is implemented in silicon instead of the OS. After I get in the car and start it up there will be a sudden drop-out of the audio at some random interval after start-up. I have at times experimented with delaying the use of any audio program for 5-10 minutes to get outside of that delay window and then starting to play something but 30s-3min after starting the audio the gap happens again. Must be something in the audio subsystem kicking off a process. I don't know. It's pretty jarring to get something going, start headbanging or bumping, then suddenly have the audio rug jerked out from under you.The other problem has only happened twice in the year I've had it and I have no idea why it happens. I get the boot animation stuck on the screen and nothing else, with the radio playing. No amount of button pushing, even the power hold-down that works on nearly every smart device ever, works to get it going. I have let it go for up to 30 minutes with no change. I have to hit the reset button with a paper clip. This seems to fix it, but then most of my customizations get reset. I don't have to re-install apps, but nearly everything else has to be restored manually. Home screen icons, sound settings, radio memory, everything. If it happened any more often than it does I'd be really upset about it, but having only happened twice now I can't complain too much. Stuff happens. Conclusion - For the price, I'm pretty happy. It isn't a high-end infotainment system, but it is better than it has a right to be for the price I paid. There are some issues, but nothing I can't live with and, again, for the price they aren't really dealbreakers. And there are some highlights that I really liked such as the audio power/quality and the kit includes. In the end I got a fairly up-to-date audio unit in my old car that does what I want it to and I don't find myself constantly wishing it had this or did that. In fact, my wish list is no worse for this unit than it has been for the infotainment systems in the last two new cars I bought. Can't beat that.
