Pairs easily with Zwift
5 out of 5 stars
Pairs easily with Zwift
Paired easily with my iPhone. It was a little bit of a challenge to pair the Polar Flow app with my Polar H9 heart rate monitor. I resolved this by restarting my phone then this device paired immediately. No issues pairing with Zwift which is great because heart rate monitors are required to do, Zwift racing.

I have been using this strap for over a year to monitor my heart rate on runs and bike rides, and it has worked flawlesly throughout. I've only changed the battery on it once during this time when I noticed that it would not connect to my bike computer. I personally have never had the band slip or shift off my chest.

Once you pair it to your watch or bike computer, it's remarkably simple to use - just put it on and it automatically turns on and starts transmitting to whatever device you have. When you take it off, it automatically powers down. There is no on/off indicator light, but I found that it's not needed, and would likely just waste battery.

This heart rate monitor has worked great! Easy to attach around my chest and it synchs with the gyms elliptical and treadmill machines right as I get on them. I like that the electronic piece snaps on and off, so I can clean the band after every use while keeping the transmitter piece dry.

Now I see in reviews it's not reliable. Its not. Worked okay through 1st battery change and then started earing batteries and then just stopped working at all! 6 months fromnunboxing to garbage. I'm a serious cyclist ex amateur racer, still average 10 hours or so a week. I'm also an electrical engineer .. something seems to be wrong with these? Incredible sensitivity to static electricity? Anyway, skip the H9!

I'm darn near 60 and recently was diagnosed with A-fib. Nothing super serious but none the less... I had been wondering if I could trust the heart rate monitor on my fruit watch (optical) and decided I needed to try something different. I should say, the Polar H9 nor the fruit watch are able to accurately detect A-fib. I read reviews an read reviews and decided the Polar H9 would be what I need. If I didn't care for it, I could give it to someone and not be out a gob of money.

Well, I'm keeping it. I like it but there are a few quirks. 1 - It feels a tad odd when it's on you. Wear it snug so it works well and doesn't slip around on you while exercising. I'm sure I'll get used to it in time. Once I get it on and wet the contacts (I'll get to that) I don't notice it. The longest I've run with it on is 4 miles. It did not bother me at all while running. Quirk 2 - you have to wet the area under the strap where the contacts are so it reads accurately. I did try it out without wetting it and it worked fine. I sweat a lot so It got damp fairly quickly. Quirk 3 - Pairing. When you want to pair the device PAIR IT WITH THE APP NOT YOUR DEVICE. I paired it with my phone and then tried to pair it with my watch. Nope. I downloaded Polar Flow and it didn't work. I then recalled something I read in a review about Polar Beat. I unpaired the Polar H9 from the phone and watch and deleted the Polar Flow app and downloaded Polar Beat. I did pair it with my phone through the Polar Beat App. Now, I did not see those instructions with the device. All was good finally. Can you pair with Polar Flow? Darned if I know since I got it to work with Polar Beat. I may try it later and if so, I'll update this. But for now I'm sticking with the Beat.

The battery life is supposed to be 400 hours on a single coin cell battery. We'll see. If that's true, that should last me a while. I don't think I'm going to get more than 6 - 8 hours of use a week so it'll last about a year. Maybe when it warms up I'll use it more so we'll see.

Oh, the instructions indicate you should rinse the strap out after each use. Probably very good advice or this thing will get stinky and crusty and not last as long.

And regarding the accuracy of this monitor vs the fruit watch, they are very similar. That actually surprised me. I'm still learning the Polar Beat App so I can't really speak to what you can and can't do with it yet.

If things go sideways, I'll edit this review. Cheers and keep moving.

After using an earlier generation Polar sensor for many years, I decided to buy this one when I bought a Garmin Venu 2 smart watch recently. The earlier Polar model couldn't be paired with the Venu 2.

This H9 model paired with Venu 2 very readily, and it's communicating my heart rate to it as reliably as one would expect.

My one and only complaint is with the elastic band's clasping design. It's extremely simple, and it's in that simplicity that I think Polar missed the boat. There's a thin plastic hook that one inserts into a small fabric "eye." Not only is the fabric's opening so small that it can be hard to see, but it has a tendency to come unhooked occasionally. The design could be much improved with an equally simple snap. Otherwise, the band is comfortable; and the transmitter functions great.

Update after 2 months: After using the H9 6 times a week, it needs a battery (CR2025) after only 2 months . Perhaps the original battery was of low quality. I would have expected longer battery life. Fortunately, it's designed so that the battery is easy to change.

I've only owned this for about 2 months now, with about 3 - 4 hours of intense sweat contact per week. But my impressions so far it's better than Garmin HRM Dual that lasted around 1.5 year with similar use pattern. The Garmin had noticeable corrosion on metal contacts, the metal buttons on strap was separating, would drop connections frequently towards end of life, and the ultimate failure points around screws on plastic unit seemed to be a silly design flaw. Unless the Garmin was a case of planned obsolescence, in which case kudos to that Garmin engineering team, it was an inferior product compared to the Polar. The Garmin failed because the thin plastic pieces beneath the tiny screw heads cracked and crumbled away so back cover could not hold battery in place. Seal was broken and the internals corroded to failure. All those weak points on the Garmin seem to be addressed on the Polar. In addition, the Polar actually pairs better with my Garmin products more quickly, consistently, and easily without having to wet the strap when I first put it on. Polar strap is a little narrower but for me its more comfortable because of softer elastic fabric. Minor downsides, the Polar strap loop and hook is not as robust and easy to use and narrower strap sometimes gets a little bunched up.
