I'm a fan of the POTC films, so when I stumbled upon this, I bought it, along with the model of the Flying Dutchman. I already have a Hamilton collection model of the Black Pearl, and these buildable models are in the same scale. So, I wanted to create a collection. I took a pic of the two ships together for illustration. Let's just say that the Hamilton model looks slightly better than the one I built. Of course, it was about 20 times more expensive too, so there's that. The box says 4+ hours to build. It took me about 15 hours to put this together, working about 4 hours per day for 4 days. I did take extra time so as to make sure I put it together properly. Measure twice, cut once as they say. Still, I'd say it would've been 10-12 hours even if I hadn't taken extra time. It was also severely frustrating in many spots. The instructions were not always 100% clear. Putting together the masts and sails was a perfect example. For the 2 main masts, the instructions are all on one page, in a blown up diagram! It is not intuitive as to what order to go in, and they give no hints as to how to proceed. I had studied it a long time, before proceeding to make sure I got it right. Even then, you kind of have to put multiple things together all at once, while hoping you don't drop what you're working on! The instructions have smaller pictures for detailed work on specific parts, but it's only minimally helpful. I've put together quite a few models so I had a good idea of how to do it, but less experienced people could have issues. It says no glue needed, and mostly that's true, but I had to break out the glue in a few instances because it simply would not have held together otherwise. It was also frustrating that as you're assembling multiple things at once, it's inevitable that something else will come apart. Ughh! I had the most trouble with the sails. There's just no easy way to put them into the masts without it popping out. Some of the sails I just sort of jammed into place, and every time I move the ship, I have to fix them. The other bad spot is the lights. It's cool that the ship lights up, but there is just no room to hide the wiring on the back as the instructions say. I cheated and stapled the back wrap-around piece to the ship body, because I couldn't fasten it down due to the bulky wiring. I'll display it with the "bad" side facing the wall! I admit, there was a few times I wanted to throw the ship into the garbage disposal. But, I prevailed. And, I only found 1 piece that I forgot to assemble when I checked everything at the end. Unfortunately, it's an inner hull piece so I'd literally have to tear the entire thing apart to fix it. Since it seems fine without it, I think I'll skip that part. Also, the battery box is held within the ship stern. That's cool, but in order to change the two AA batteries(not included), you have to disassemble the back of the model! Not cool! Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. It looks cool lit up, and cool from 10 feet away. As long as nobody looks too closely at it to see the obvious flaws with the "ahem" construction, it makes a nice addition to my collection. I'm very much dreading putting together my Flying Dutchman now though. Last word of advice, be patient! Several pieces need perfect alignment to assemble, so go slow. Also, they give a handy tool to "pop out" the pieces to the puzzle, but sometimes they get hung up. On a few occasions, I used my hands to free them the rest of the way, only to cause damage, and I had to break out the glue to fix it. Have fun!

I love building models and have completed many of them. Although, I have never really enjoyed the types that don't require glue to put them together. I have tried wooden ones where the pieces slide together and, while it looked nice, wasn't enough of a challenge for me to enjoy.

This puzzle surprised me! It does just slide together, but has many pieces, and becomes very intricate at times. The pieces fit together extremely well which makes the overall ship look beautiful. The instructions were easy to follow. The pieces were easy to remove without worrying about destroying any of them, as long as you were careful. As I put it together the ship turned out to be very sturdy. I didn't have to worry about pieces falling off, or the ship being squashed, which handling it.

The end result was a nice sized ship with a lot of detail. The LED lights are a nice addition, and it looks great on the display stand, which you assemble as well. It was challenging enough to keep me interested, and priced extremely well.

Keep in mind that even though this model is built without paint or glue, it may be too difficult for young children.

I definitely recommend this for any model lover and will certainly keep my eye out for similar products.

Gave this to my wife as a Christmas gift. She loves puzzles and is also really into pirates so I thought that this would be perfect. Indeed, it was.

She really enjoyed working on this during her Christmas break and the end result is a really cool piece that we will place onto a floating shelf in her home office.

All of the pieces were there and they are of quality construction. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. We did have to use a tiny spot of super glue on two pieces at the bow of the ship but other than that, everything fit together the way it was supposed to.

Not going to lie, I don't do many reviews, so IF I do one, it's because I feel its worth my time.
TLDR; great detail, great fit and finish, great design, relatively easy to put together, IT INCLUDES LED LIGHTS and a stand; But, while it's not that challenging, it will require some brainpower on your end because not EVERYTHING is perfect. BUT, this is a wonderful, well thought out, and fun kit to put together.
I am about 7/8ths of the way through this build, and I am loving it. Everything is precisely cut; ALMOST everything punches out nicely; everything fits together with relative ease; the design and engineering behind this kit is well thought out, and I found myself many times throughout the process complimenting the kit. That being said, it is not without some, albeit minor, flaws. Some of those flaws could be attributed to my lack of experience and finesse; Others, do notably lie with the kit. The instructions are well noted, pictured, and laid out. They provide a tool to help punch out the parts, and for 80% of them, it is the best option to use; However, you WILL want to have a smaller tool at hand for many of the "punch outs" you'll have to do. You WILL be punching out MANY holes of which most will require a smaller tool than what is provided. Not a big deal, just use a toothpick, coffee stirrer, or a pair of tweezers- you'll find something in your junk drawer that will work. You cant really expect much more for ~$40 or less. Not an issue, really. Most parts in this "puzzle" (I put that in quotes because its not really a "puzzle," in that you are given quite specific instructions on how to put it all together- there's really no "mystery" here about how it all fits together. You will win, I promise. ) fit together quite nicely. For the most part, it all fits nice and tight- in some cases, too tight to the point that you wonder if you're doing it wrong and might break something- and in a few cases, I did, but not badly so. In other cases, I will absolutely recommend that you use some tape where it isn't recommended, or some simple Elmer's glue; otherwise, you WILL lose some pieces due to a loose fit. It really all depend son the kit YOU receive. After all, at it's core, this is nothing more than a series of foam-core parts, stamped and colored to be squeezed together so, use caution when assembling, but its more sturdy than it seems. Nevertheless, this has been a JOY to assemble, so far. I'm not even done yet, but I have already found myself looking for other 3D "puzzles" from this manufacturer to try my hand at. In summary: great detail, great fit and finish, great design, IT INCLUDES LED LIGHTS, a stand, a punch-out tool and well done instructions. But, while it's not that challenging, it will require some brainpower, ingenuity, and in a few instances, bravery on your part. I 100% recommend this kit.

Our adult son has been crazy for jigsaw puzzles since he was a little boy. We get him one every year at Christmas. This year we decided to go a little different and looked at 3D puzzles. We chose this because it has a lot of little details, has led lights, and can be displayed after being finished. He seemed to like it when he opened it Christmas Eve, but wasn't particularly enthusiastic. Fast forward to 11pm, after they had gone home and gotten three excitable little kids to bed. His fiancee texts me pictures of him with it halfway put together. He told her he wasn't going to bed until he finished it. It's really nice-looking when finished and with the lights in. Very detailed, looks great, especially in a darkened room with the led lights on. It was challenging and interesting enough for him refused to walk away from it unfinished; he would absolutely have put it aside if it wasn't. He has it on a high shelf. Unlike flat puzzles, it doesn't require glue in order to display it. He likes it so much that he's said he would love to get more for his birthday and Christmas. We will definitely be buying the other versions. Excellent gift for someone who likes puzzles or is interested in pirate ships.
