Midea 12,000 BTU U-Shaped Window A/C Review
4 out of 5 stars
Midea 12,000 BTU U-Shaped Window A/C Review
I purchased this unit to replace a GE window unit that was overworked for the space; the poor little thing just couldn’t keep up. Since I’m a renter, I can’t go installing a true mini-spilt. Options in the 12K BTU range require one to be discerning so I chose the Midea. Hopefully, this review helps you to decide if this unit is the right choice for you.The good: I find this unit to be innovative when compared to the window A/C units I’m used to. It runs quietly. No, it’s not silent and yes, you can hear the compressor operation with the window closed but you must listen very carefully. My old A/C unit just announced its operation to the whole neighborhood and keep me awake. This unit can move a decent volume of air and cool it fairly quickly under the conditions I’ve used it so far; the dog days of summer may reveal a different tale, but time will tell. At 20 feet away I can feel cold air, but it’s certainly not blowing my hair back.Set to cool at 60 degrees with the fan on high, it is still quiet enough to hold a conversation. Sound exposure is subjective though, so I will let you be the judge. It's aesthetically pleasing from the inside and doesn’t just hang off the windowsill like some tacky rubbish from the late 1970s. The mobile app is nice to use and offers as many features as my previous appliance offered and more. (It even gives a local weather forecast by AccuWeather; a nice 2 for 1). The app lets you program schedules or routines to provide a “set-it-&-forget-it” function. The company seems to have thought of the consumer by providing things like an extra parts bag in case you lose things during installation/seasonal re-installation, oodles of insulating foam to seal the fitment, and a pretty nifty remote control… (if you choose to use it, batteries included)The remote has a battery indicator, an orange backlit screen which doesn’t kill your eyes at night and the buttons glow in the dark.. That’s pretty cool. We’ll see if it lasts. The backlit screen also goes to sleep after a few seconds so you don’t have an orange light just sitting around.Speaking of lights, the remote can be used to deactivate the unit’s LEDs, and that also silences the beeping sounds. This is also possible in the app. Previous generations of this unit apparently did not offer this feature, but mine was manufactured in December 2022. Hopefully, some OTA firmware update is made to correct older generations. The bad: The installation is a bear. Patience is a virtue on this one folks, it really is. If you live alone, don’t be afraid to recruit a buddy to lend a hand since the complete shipping carton is heavy, and having two people lift the appliance onto the window bracket is ideal. You will need a drill/screw gun/impact driver. The use of hand tools for this whole job is absurd and they really should include that in the install instructions. Drill pilot holes for your screws to avoid splitting the window frame or sill. The ‘center’ arrow on the bracket isn’t exactly center so make sure you measure the distance of the bracket rails to the window frame for a true guide.Understandably, residential windows come in all sorts of configurations and I had to set my bracket on stacked spacers from the hardware store to support it as the sill did not reach it. Be prepared to engineer a solution to stuff like this. The bracket is designed for single–width window frames and I have a side-by-side meaning I may or may not have had to get creative with fastening the bracket. The rubber feet that rest against the exterior wall don’t seem to be adhered very well. Not to mention I rent so to protect the paint, I zip-tied sections of pipe insulation around them to protect both the paint and the feet. The dense white foam blocks are hard to cut so use something scary sharp (I used a kitchen cleaver) Another option may be to use an ultra-fine tooth coping saw, band saw, or scroll saw (woodworkers would know better for that).Anyway, with the foam, measure thrice & cut once because you only get one chance on the dense white blocks. Shaping those to your window frame will likely need a steady hand and something like an exacto-knife (I picked up a snap-blade knife). The bottom of some windows, like mine, will not seat against the foam provided when closed. The fix for this? A section of 2” pipe insulation laid in the gap measured to the width of the window frame + 0.25” (that disables the plastic security locks on the back, but the screw-in L-bracket can still be used if desired)The channels of the main rails that hold the unit aren’t well insulated either and just look like a great home for a wasp nest. Seal that up as you see fit with the foam they provide, expanding foam, plumber’s putty, or something but be aware, those are both air gaps and welcome mats for all kinds of bugs.Window dressings may not fit into the gap making for openings on the left & right sides of the interior fan and precluding privacy/light intrusion. Plan for that as well. You may have to dink around for a while to get things sealed up which makes me laugh at the marketing of “You can open the window!” Why would I do that when I just went to far and gone to insulate this thing and defeat that whole purpose?!All in all, this design comes with its advantages but downfalls as well. Thankfully once it’s installed, it’s installed and you can forget about it for a few months anyway. The ’swing’ feature seems a little gimmicky and I have yet to tell if it is actually functional. Moving the louver up & down is cute but the jury is still out on this one.Wi-Fi setup wasn’t the easiest until I got the appliance into “AP” mode then it became visible to my network. You don’t need it connected to the internet to use it, but having the app is a nice touch. I can’t speak to the smart home device features though since I don’t have any listening devices in my house lolThe power cord measures 58”/147cm and exits the RH side of the unit. Plan for this when choosing a window to install it in and make sure you have an outlet where the end of the plug can route the cord downward. Don’t try running this on an extension cord, it needs to be connected to an outlet on at least a 15A circuit breaker. The ugly: (yet to come) … For a company that is this innovative, I am surprised to see that Midea did not create better condenser drainage on the outdoor portion of the unit. Underneath, there looks to be a stamping in the sheet metal for a drain but no drain hole – come on guys. I’ve heard there’s some kind of ‘slinger ring’ on the outer fan that’s supposed to fling water on those components to keep them cool. Um, I thought that’s what air-cooling via fan was for? Virtually every other A/C system I’ve seen from window unit, to automotive, to residential, to commercial, provides a way to drain excess condensation. It’s science – the condenser gets cold and condensation forms in the hot weather when A/C is being used. Same reason a glass of ice water gets wet on the outside in the summer. This has been spoken of in other reviews to harbor mold & mosquito larvae – hard pass. I’m not going to go drilling holes into the unit because with my luck I’d ruin it but I will share a hack I stole fair & square from the internet…*carefully (and I mean carefully) insert the edge of a piece of first aid gauze between the condenser fins and the white sheet metal pan on the bottom of the unit on the rear outdoor side. This will act as a wick to wick up the excess moisture and drain it out onto the ground with no drilling needed.Inserting the string of a tampon to do the same thing is another method but I think the gauze would work better. Change it out as needed or replace it if it blows away. You can secure it with a magnet but be advised that the magnet will rust.Thankfully I live in a fairly dry climate and I hope this won’t be a big deal; but if you live in a humid climate, say FL for instance (sorry Florida man…) then this appliance might not be the right pick. Sure, you can install it with a certain degree of rearward tilt and all that, but moisture gonna do what it does. From condensation to the collection of rainwater, I’m saddened to know that this expensive unit could become a petri dish for mold & mosquitos. If Midea is going to think far enough ahead to include extra hardware and make the remote buttons glow in the dark, why not include a condenser drain?!Closing thoughts: Would I buy this again? Perhaps, but knowing the rigor of installation would have me reading more reviews. Would I recommend this unit? Yes, but… with the caveat that installation could be the deal breaker, and if that doesn’t do it, be mindful of the condenser drain issue.

Have had mine installed for a while week now. Got the 12K unit, room is about 410 sqft.

    Pros:

    - Gets very cold, very quickly
    - Very quiet compared to our portable AC and our other traditional window units
    - As long as you take your time, the instructions and video are extremely helpful.

    Cons:

    - Weird smell the first 2 days, seems to have dissipated after that
    - The remote is absolutely garbage. Throw it in a drawer and use your phone.

Due to the legs not being long enough (I have a shallowish window), I had to take a 3/4in board and put it between the feet and siding. I then screwed it into my siding, siliconed the screw heads, and put a bead along the top, sides, and bottom of the board to avoid moistures accumulation.

I'm very pleased with this so far and will update if I have any issues, but so far it's. Been a godsend.

So, I hate summer. Some people get SAD in winter, I get it in summer. I just hate being hot. But I also hate how loud my 12,000 BTU unit was. I had to choose between watching a movie or having it on. No fun. I bought this after reading a review in the newspaper. I then researched other of these new saddle-style units plus some traditional units that are supposed to be quiet. I settled on this one mainly because I could get 12,000 BTUs and the others tapped out at 8100.

Set up is about as difficult as putting together IKEA furniture. I did it in about 20 minutes. The process is pretty logical. I do recommend watching the video provided by the company and maybe googling some other install videos by other users. I watched a couple before beginning and I think that helped. I do recommend that you own a level for this project. The instructions say you should and I agree that it really isn't optional for this project.

I was able to install it on my own, and I am a weakling, so single people can do this. However, I probably would have preferred to have a helper just to lift the unit into the window.

It is quiet. I am so happy with the noise level. I tried watching a nature documentary on a lowish volume and could still hear David Attenborough's sublime narration. This is the feature I was most interested in and it delivers. It is also more attractive than your standard window a/c, which is a bonus.

The company waxes poetic about being able to open the window with the unit in. I have to say that while that is doable, it probably isn't as practical as they make it out to be, namely because the screen (at least on my window) has to be up so opening the window would let in bugs. It is lower profile and narrower than my other unit, so I do get more window and light, which is nice.

My only worry is the reviews on here that discuss condensation pooling and causing mold. I have only had this a day, so I will update this after using it a bit. Reading through reviews and talking with my spouse, any A/C can suffer from that problem, so it might not be a midea problem, but time will tell. As far as noise and efficiency, I am very, very happy. Hopefully this coming summer will be less depressing. I will still try to find a job in Maine. Or Alaska. Or maybe Norway. I am not built for swampy summers.

Edit after using this all last summer: I still love it and bought a second unit. I will note that the second unit arrived and stopped working soon after -- something probably got cracked in transport so I don't think it was Midea's fault. I put in a claim and got refunded the cost, which I appreciated it. I replaced that second unit and now have two of these beauties in my apartment. I did not have the condensation problem people mention in other reviews. I am no expert, but I think that issue might be due to installing it in such a way as the unit can't drain properly. I was very careful to get the angle just right and used a level (you really do need to own a proper level for installation -- buy one with your order if you don't already have one).

But after a summer of running this living in a hot and humid location, this was worth every penny. It cools very well and efficiently. It almost feels like I have central a/c. It is also very quiet. Even on high, I can hear myself think. I recommend this A/C to everyone I can.

Consumer Reports lists this model as the top-rated 12,000 BTU window A/C you can buy, by quite a bit. Perhaps that's why the model is sold out almost everywhere for the time being, and Amazon only has them from third-party sellers at $300 over the list price. Even so, if you absolutely have to an air conditioner this season, it may be worth it.

What makes this model and the two smaller models in the product line unique is the way the inverter/compressor and air circulation unit are completely separated from each other. In a sense, this is like a mini-split A/C, but fit into the form factor of a window unit for those who have no way to mount a mini-split in their home. We live in a high rise in NYC, so a mini-split is definitely out of the question. Also, most mini-splits require a 220v circuit, which isn't available in our post-war building. The Midea U runs on a standard 110v circuit. The Midea U is the first window unit to meet the latest Energy Star efficiency standard, being more than twice as efficient as most models. That said, the SAR rating is is comparable to the least efficient mini-split systems. In other words, the most efficient window air conditioner you can buy right now, which is this model, is equivalent to the least efficient mini-split air conditioner. If there is any way you can install a mini-split A/C in your home, it will likely pay for itself in just a few seasons. If you live in a high rise and can talk the management into installing central air, even as expensive as that might be, it will likely pay for itself compared to using window units. However, if you have no choice in the matter, this is the one to buy.

When it comes to installation, the instructions are fairly minimal and a bit confusing. Complicating matters is that Midea requires the use of their proprietary mounting bracket (included) - otherwise the warranty is voided. That can be a problem in New York or any city with restrictions on mounting over brick. We got around that by installing the unit over our terrace, where falling bricks aren't an issue, but not everyone has that option. It may be worthwhile getting something in writing from Midea that they will honor the warranty, should an alternative mounting bracket have to be used by law. The supplied mounting bracket is significantly longer than the air conditioner and was probably designed for use with other models. For some, that may be a problem as it may stick out too far. Since the unit's on our terrace, the bracket was decidedly in the way. It's not possible to saw off the excess, as that would compromise its integrity. Instead, I took up the slack on the inside by using a pair of T-brackets to shift the mounting bracket back to a more reasonable position, which worked quite well.

The mounting bracket is designed to attach to the inside of the window frame on both sides, but that's a problem if the window has multiple segments, as is the case with ours. We have a large picture window with double-hung windows on each side. Therefore, there is no inside to which to mount the bracket on the right side. As shown in the picture, the mounting bracket is left just hanging in mid air. The way I secured it was with a spacer and a long screw to mount it to the window sill below.

The window itself serves to separate the internal and external portions of the unit from each other. This isolates the vibrations of the compressor, making for an exceptionally quiet window unit. However, there are spaces on both sides that still require insulation, for which white foam insulating panels have been provided. Unfortunately, there's barely enough insulation to do the job, and our window was far from the widest for which the unit was designed. Be prepared to buy more if needed. Also, there is flexible memory foam provided, but it's black and the foam panels are white, which isn't a good combination. Worse, there isn't quite enough memory foam, so be prepared to buy more, preferably in white. There are gaps underneath the A/C that are easily missed, through which air can get through, and possibly bugs. Be sure to take the time to plug these with additional memory foam. Finally, there isn't room to use your screen, so if you plan to open the window on a nice day, you might want to build your own screen to fit the available space.

In operation, the unit works extremely well. It's quiet, efficient and much better at cooling the room than our last one. The interface takes a little getting used to and the unit has it's way of overruling your choices so as to provide more effective cooling. It's actually easier to use the smartphone app than the included remote control, but again, there's a learning curve. Setting up the A/C with your WiFi is tricky, but reliable once done. You will need to broadcast your SSID, which most people do - otherwise, the Midea will lose connectivity. Living in a high rise with dozens of WiFi networks in range, I would have preferred otherwise. If you have the expertise and live in a similar situation, I recommend getting a router that lets you restrict WiFi connections to those you specify (MAC address filtering). The smartphone app will work with multiple units, so if you install more than one of them, you'll be able to control them all from one location.

Top-rated, most energy-efficient, quietist A/C - if you can find one - but installation's tricky

4.0 out of 5 stars worth the money

I am thrilled with this purchase! I bought the 12000btu unit. You may think this unit is pricey, but its worth every penny. It comes with a safety bracket, so no messing around with blocks of wood or purchasing one separately. Now, the good stuff. Its VERY, VERY quiet. I can barely hear it running on full power. It takes out the humidity and cools my 1200sqft area perfectly. On a cool day, I can open my window and let the breeze in. It is also compact. If you compare dimensions of other units with the same BTU...this one definitely takes up much less window room. The only reason I didn't give this unit a 5/5 is It took more time to set up than the video suggests...but there are lots a safety features...so well worth it. Cheers to the future of air Conditioners!! Thank you Midea.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unit does only blow warm air - after complete installation

We have installed the unit according to the manual. Nothing complicated about the setup, just takes some time. The original support brackets did not fit our window. Purchased a different support brackets from Amazon. The surprise was at the time of starting the unit. Only warm air! Should have tested the unit before installation. Noise level is good, as the compressor is outside the window. This type of A/C is never pretty from the outside. Unit has a remote control and able to connect to smart phone. This is all good and forward thinking if the basic function of cooling works.

Works good. Installing wasn't very hard. I could not setup the wifi using my Pixel phone it keep getting an error when it was trying to connect it. I had to use a samsung phone to get it to work also there was no app in the store on my tablet. Depending on you device it might have issues with the setup. Once connected worked great and google home could control it wonderfully.
