Product Description

The iLIVING Shutter Exhaust Fan is perfect for removing excess heat, moisture, and unpleasant odors from virtually any commercial location, including restaurants, factories, warehouses, barns, and greenhouses. This fan features aluminum blades, OSHA compliant wire guards, and automatic shutters that open and close in tandem with the operation of the fan. The completely enclosed motor is thermally protected and permanently lubricated. Equipped with the newest Thermospeed Controller which can easily control the temperature and speed. Auto cycle ON/OFF at your desired temperature. The fan comes fully assembled out of the box; only installation required is the electrical hardwiring.

I checked the CFM to verify it was adequate for the attic. With the controller on maximum speed, the air speed through a 12"x12" cardboard duct averaged 846 feet per minute and the power draw was 70Watts. Guessing that the fan will be running 10 hours a day and at the Summertime Peak Energy Rate, that is just over $4 per month to operate. My next task is to buy a Fire Shut-Off Fuse. I just learned that there was such a thing.

Shutters are very sensitive to wind movement. Great, unless you can hear them clang. I placed this unit on a now defunct roof to attic evaporative down main evaporative chute (amplifies sound, so I cut removed the offending vent branches-much quieter now) I placed a soft pull spring on vertical shutter bar to pull open & leave shutters partially opened (for a lot less clang) as this opening also serves as a hot air passive vent even when fan is not on. Any hi wind blowback still gets the shutters closed. Also,I placed a 1' thick metal strip against back of motor to reduce vibration noise and to help dissipate heat from motor. The adjustable fan speed and temperature thermostat work very well. Find the speed /temp that works for you. I am placing an on/off wall switch on 2nd floor to easily turn off 110v vs going to main panel for a manual off. Do not want to go to attic to adjust temperature control. Figure electric cost of about 2 to 3 bucks a month, but should more than offset w cooler roof and less work & watt cost on 2 hvac units.

Instead of use auto opening vents I got this instead, and it works substantially better and more reliably and it doesn't get in the way. You need power, but I use an extension cord lightly buried in mulch and forget about it.

Something to remember when it is windy the louvers will flap open and closed which can be a little noisy if that's something that might bother you. It's not loud but if you seek absolute silence in your garden like I do you may need to put some padding on it. The FAN itself turn on full for just second to get the louvers open and then resumes near silent running while it cools the space off. Even that it not loud.

This thing moves air! I have had it for about a year and it is still going strong. It does appear to have leaked a bit of oil or grease from the motor, but considering how much it runs (100% of the time from May to September) and the cost, I think it has done very well. I have purchased a backup as I expect this to fail in the next year or so. Over the entire year, it runs about 85% of the time.

I installed this fan in my garage to vent the heat out in the evenings. Oh boy, did it make a difference! My wife and I were shocked at how well this unit performs - it's strong enough to create a vacuum against the door to the house so that when we enter the garage it pulls the door shut behind us. It's reduce the temperature in the garage by 8-10 degrees Celsius in the evenings (on a hot day would get to 28C and now we can get it under 20C by midnight. The house subsequently is cooler, specifically the bedroom above the garage.
It was a big difficult to find a vent cover that I could use on the outside of the house, as I didn't want to leave it open. I found a 14x14 metal cover at Rona for about $35 which has done the trick.
The wiring was pretty straightforward (green under green screw, black to black, white to white) but the instructions are terrible. Take a few pictures of your wiring and have an electrician friend confirm your wiring if you're not certain about it.
We also purchased the wireless controller system. It works really well and is pretty easy to figure out (again, the instructions suck but it's pretty straightforward). Would highly recommend this add-on.
One other thing - the baffles on the back side of the unit are awesome. The overall unit is much more commercial grade/industrial than I was expecting - I was expecting something a little stronger than a 150 CFM bathroom fan but this thing can crush a lot of airflow and is not even in the same league as a bathroom fan.
We didn't realize how much of a difference this fan has made, and have recommended it to many family and friends. If you have a garage or crawl space it's worth the investment, you'd be surprised!

I installed this fan in the garage near the top of the gable. It works amazingly well, before this fan I couldn't walk into the garage without pouring sweat and having to open all the doors to let cool air in.
