Customers find the aquarium cleaner to be decent value for money. However, the functionality and cleaning ability receive mixed reviews - while some say it works well, others report it stops working during the first try and doesn't clean very well. Moreover, the durability is concerning as the product breaks after only two uses, and the size is problematic as it's too bulky for 20-gallon tanks. The suction power and ease of use also get mixed feedback, with some praising the suction while others find it terrible, and some find it easy to operate while others say it's not intuitive. Additionally, the clog rate is a significant issue, with the sponge attachment clogging quickly on first use.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2022I stayed up until 4am playing with this, doing water changes. i bought it to help my back issues, as a 5gallon bucket is approximately 50lbs weight. i keep goldfish PROPERLY, so it’s important to keep changed. This tool does that, and so much more! it comes with lots of cleaning attachments, you can use this pump to clean any kind of tank: salt, fresh, big, small, sand, gravel, barebottom, you name it. I honestly can’t recommend this enough, and i definitely recommend you check out hygger’s other aquarium stuff.
my only complaint is: the black tubing used for doing water changes is a little thin. this helps it be way more flexible and manageable than tubing on other pumps/siphons, but it does mean it doesn’t seal as well when you slide it on. i recommend permanently sealing the tube to its attachment piece. mine doesn’t leak, it will only drip from that spot about 3-4 drops in the time it takes to pump a 5 gal. bucket. sealing it is no big deal at all. incredible price!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025Flat out does not work right out of the box. Got it to work one time after multiple tries.
1. Vacuum attachment with sponge is put together so you cannot possible clean the sponge.
2. Intermittently does not work out of the box. First time I turned it on I could hear the motor but nothing was coming out. Had to turn it off and on several times.
3. Connections leak. I had to put teflon tape on the connection but then it still leaks when the tubing connects to the wand.
4. Big and bulky and hard to maneuver around the rocks.
5. The power switch is down near the plug???? Why just why? You literally have to put an extension cord on it and tie wrap the switch closer to the wand to have to close enough to turn off and on.
6. This is the scary part. I think it is an AC pump??? Hopefully it shorts out but it is not a DC pump.
I will try it for a few more days but not particularly happy with it. I had higher expectations from Hygger. I usually like their stuff but this is just not that good of a design.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2025I love this vac. After reading some reviews and seeing some about how parts don’t fit, I don’t think they used the adapter that goes on after the main vac portion first or something. Everything works and fits perfectly on mine! There’s a ton of attachments for multiple uses. It’s pretty powerful.
I have a 36 gal bow front Neo shrimp tank and a 55gal turtle tank.
The only room for improvement I’ve noticed is that it would be better if there was some kind of power level control.
-In my shrimp tank, I have fluval stratum substrate, which I don’t recommend vacuuming 🤣 I keep it about an inch or two away and it’s powerful enough to not suck it up but any dead roots/waste off the top layer. If I use the vacuum and the recycle water feature, (not doing a water change) the water coming back into the tank comes back pretty hard and clouds everything up. Doing water changes to/from my 5gal bucket is a game changer though! Again, a little too powerful for shooting water back into the tank. So what I did is attached the recycle water outlet to the black refill hose, with the filters still inside. I don’t think they intended it for this, but it really helps soften the blow and not disturb my substrate! See picture.
For my turtle tank. I have larger rocks, easy to clean. Again, the recycling vacuum is a little overpowering and clouds up the tank though. Just like my other tank, being as tall as it is, I would think I wouldn’t have much of an issue. I did shorten it a little to get it closer to the water top, but didn’t help much.
The filters also can get clogged with turtle sludge pretty quick. While it creates a few extra steps in cleaning out those parts, still does a great job and faster than my syphon hose vac. Refilling is also a breeze. I don’t use my softening method as the bottom has 2in River rock and doesn’t fall apart like stratum
4/5 stars mainly because the lack of power control. I don’t think it’s that good for the recycle vac option, but for the price and functionality of its other features it’s great! I love mine and all my other hygger products. Best bang for your buck!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024I love that this is a gravel vac that only needs a few inches of water so I can get ALL the gunk from my nano tanks. The MAJOR flaw for me is not having a shut off on the handle. Not only that, but the switch is waaay back on the cord. Its not great. It hasn't happened yet, but it's a matter of time before the very strong suction grabs a plant, or a baby fish and there will be nothing I can do to stop it. It does come with at least one really helpful guard, but baby skrimps and baby Nanos will go right through. Still, 5 stars for being a lifesaver and saving me a lot of work!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2022It can be a bit challenging to get the unit to begin suction. You have to sort of finesse the angle of your dispensing tube in conjunction with your sink to get the suction activated. Once it is pumping however, it works somewhat well for sand/gravel cleaning. The motor is significantly less powerful than i anticipated and does not do well in suctioning larger debris such as decomposing vegetation. If you’re trying to get deep into thick substrate, it struggles a bit as well maintaining suction power. The kit itself comes with a nice multitude of attachments which allow access to hard to reach places/the ability to clean varying types of granular substrates which is something unique to other models I’ve owned. The handle comes with extensions, which allows you to customize the length of it if you have a deeper tank. The cord is relatively short, so you will need an open outlet that is close - within 4 feet of the tank itself, or an extension cord. The largest perk of this style cleaner is it’s environmental impact. Sure you use a little electricity, but when comparing its use to conventional sink/vacuum style gravel cleaners, you save a considerable amount of water by having an electric pump. Overall, I would consider this a decent product for the price, but feel it is underpowered for those with larger grain substrates/heavily planted tanks.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025Everything is a expected love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked well
Nice powerful pump. Can Drain 25 gallons in about 8-10 minutes. I attached a 25 foot hose to mine and put the end in my laundry tub to drain. If you use a bucket make sure you have the off switch in your hand otherwise you will overflow. The cleaning tools are good, but I have a sand substrate and this pump does not like that. I need to clean it out frequently because sand gets into the unit and stops. I only use the pump to rapid drain and not clean in this tank.
- Amazon CustomerReviewed in Canada on August 15, 2022
4.0 out of 5 stars Great for water changes -
Great for water changes, really sucks, I accidentally sucked up heaps of gravel, blocked it, until I got used to using it properly.
Pretty straight forward, I wasn’t interested in the water filtering, just the water changes.
It is great at removing water, only comment, it should come with a clip to hold the hose in a bucket(I use a 5 gal contractor bucket from a hardware.) I was so busy hovering the gravel, I looked down and realized the bucket was almost full.
As a note it will keep draining when turned off due to Siphoning effect, you need to lift out of the water.
Refilling from a bucket was a lot easier than the usual haul it to the tank, just place it in the bucket, put the hose into the tanks, and turn on.
The on off switch is a great feature.
So far I’ve only used it once, but totally loving it.
A must recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good idea but poor quality
Used 3 times so far, got blocked twice. Had to disassemble the pump piece by piece. But I could not find what caused the pump fail to spin. Reassembled the pieces and it worked again. The build quality is poor and flimsy with thin plastics. Cannot compare with the quality Eheim, fluval, SICCE etc. Noise level is good.
The pump is also bulky, not suitable for 20 gallon tanks and less. When in use, you have to pay much attention not let it suck some dirt or plants debris otherwise it easily fails.
Overall, the pump is weak, it can not suck water of the tank on the ground to the height of kitchen sink. It also uses 110v directly, unlike some others using 12 v or 24 v DC. Not recommend it at all.
- Hardy WanReviewed in Canada on June 24, 2022
3.0 out of 5 stars Outlet pipe sucks, and it is too powerful for small tank
CONS:
* As other reviews, the suction power is good and actually too powerful w/o control for small tank (reduce 1 star).
* Also, got the same bad comment (reduce another star) on the outlet hose which is made of cheap plastic that is not transparent & kink super easily.
PROS:
* Powerful suction gives big help to add water process
* Good & efficient sand/gravel cleaning feature
To me, PROS overtrumps CONS, and I am keeping the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing product and after-sales service
This pump works great for my 20 gallon tank, I'm able to do water changes in about half the time it normally takes me. I did seem to get a faulty pump first, as it stopped working after 2 months of using it once a week. I contacted the seller and they assisted me right away and sent me a new one. I received the new pump within 2 days of contacting and showing them that the pump did not work. This will be a game changer for my 65 gallon tank when I set it up and I highly recommend it!
