I've always had one set of fans blowing air out of my home, while drawing in fresh air with another set. These duel fan designs can expel or bring in a large volume of air, but they can also circulate a room (one out, one in), if that's your goal.
When the wildfire smoke arrived, the force of these blowing out (with an air-conditioner filtering the outside air) was enough to avoid smoke inhalation.
There are also WiFi-connected Smart features, where the fan can be accessed remotely (even over your cell network, while you're away -- a huge selling point). So, if you're at work, you can check your room temperature and adjust the fans, accordingly.
The app, while not perfect, is definitely decent.
The Voice Assistant stuff ""works"", but most of that is extremely hit-or-miss, with an emphasis on "miss". But it's there if you want it (I would rather just use the app).
I currently have it set with profiles to pull air in, during certain temperatures and conditions, and to expell when it's hot, while the air-conditioner cools the rest of the house. That has all worked, on an automated schedule, quite well.
I'm extremely impressed with the design, having had to deal with the other (popular, recommended) brands, over the years. This unit is easily cleaned, easily fixable, and is simply the most premium window fan I've come across.
Don't bother with the cheaper fans. This one is worth every penny.
Pros:
- easy to install
- easy to setup WiFi
- works with my Android device
- works with Google Home, though I never access it that way
- has a remote though I never access it that way
- removable blades for cleaning
- temperature display on the unit
Cons:
- using the remote across the room is tricky because you can't tell which setting is active. You can change it, but it's not obvious with the tiny LEDs which one is current.
- doesn't blow as much air as my dumb fan
- doesn't auto resume after power outage
One of the fans wasn't working right and the seller had me contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer replaced it right away. Note calling them worked better than messaging them.
Noise is a widely underrated stress factor. Given that window fans operate continuously where people sleep and/or work, minimum noise emission is my number-one criterion for selecting a window fan. On the lowest fan speed, the Aspen window fan is significantly more quiet than any other fan I have seen and *heard,* including e.g. the "Bionaire Window Fan with Twin 8.5-Inch Reversible Airflow Blades and Remote Control."
Of course, noise emission needs to be considered related to air throughput. Naturally, moving more air per second will generate more noise. Port of the problem is that several older models of window fans I have been using do not allow a low enough fan speed to reduce the noise to an acceptable level for sleeping or working. Often times, I do not actually need the high airflow they consider a minimum, but would rather have less noise.
A sad case of "gone to the dogs" is the "Bionaire Window Fan with Twin 8.5-Inch Reversible Airflow Blades and Remote Control," which often turns up when you do a web search for quiet window fans. I have purchased that fan three times. The older models were indeed nicely quiet, but the newer ones suffer from an intolerably increased noise level -- no way to sleep or work with that noise.
Another great advance is the ability of voice control or control. When it comes to sleeping, a remote control is nice, but you still have to find it. For deep sleepers it may be easier to just mumble "Alexa, window fan off" when you already feel your tonsils swelling in the cold air. Control by app also has its merits, e.g. if you happen to be downstairs when the thunderstorm sets in.
With the laudable exception of this fan by Aspen, the spectrum of window fan models we are presented suffers from lack of innovation. It needed Aspen to find out that we want our fans to be quiet, easy to operate in the dark, and easy to clean. Hallelujah!
And the price? Who cares! What's $50 more compared to sleeping and working in nerve-wrecking noise for the next 10 years? (And breathing in the new forms of life that have evovlved in some non-cleanable cheapo window fan...)
That said, there is still one step of innovation I am waiting for: Removable lids for the fan openings that I can put on when we are under a short cold spell in spring or fall. That would save me from having to remove the fan from the window entirely each time. Aspen, are you listening?
