I bought this for my daughter's 5th birthday and she opened it and wanted to play with it right away...so I got 4 brand new AA batteries and put them in properly...and nothing worked...not the light or the vacuum/suction. So I took the batteries out and made sure that I put them in correctly...which I had...and I screwed the lid back on and tried again...and still nothing! I tried a 3rd time and then it finally worked....so I don't know what that was about...but I didn't like it lol. The suction is mediocre...could definitely be a little stronger...my daughter tried to vacuum up a tiny beetle and it wouldn't suck it up. I'm not very impressed with this thing :(

Now, I'm an adult and I got this for me, lol. Because I keep seeing regular cordless handheld vacuums that they will try and call a "Bug Vacuum." But they are really just regular handheld vacuums!! For real! They don't even TRY and make them any different either. I mean heck, I wish I had the funds to manufacture a REAL bona fide bug vacuum, because there still really isn't one... Well, there's the "BugZooka," lol. But that technically isn't really a vacuum. The truth is, this here Nature Bound Bug Catching Toy is one of the only actual bug vacuums that DO exist. The only other one that I saw was another kid's bug catcher vacuum, except it was in the shape of an anteater I believe.

Anyway, TO ME, what makes this a bona fide bug catcher vacuum is the suction tube. Because it has an actual chamber for the bugs, AND you can close it off by turning the magnifying glass piece. And so, I decided to get this bug vacuum JUST for that piece. Well, I'm not going to delve into what I've done with it, but I will say that it has held up well so far for what I've been using it for, lol.

And by the way, the vacuum part of this bug catcher vacuum takes 4 AA batteries that are not included. However, once you have put the batteries in and you've turned the vacuum on to try it out, you might find that it's not really sucking at all. Well, I initially had this problem, but I eventually figured out what was wrong. You know the little magnifying glass piece on the vacuum tube that you turn to trap the bugs in there? The reason there was almost no power behind the suction was because it was closed... 😄😆🤣 Hey, it happens to the best of us, lol. But anyway, while this bug catcher vacuum doesn't have the greatest suction, it DOES have some.

Got this because we tend to get stink bugs and ladybugs in our house and this would be an easier way to get rid of them. Plus my daughter can help. She's gotten a kick out of this. No ladybugs yet, just three stink bugs. The suction isn't strong, but it's enough to pull the bug in as long as put the tip up close to it. In all three cases, the bug got caught in the inner door of the vacuum and never got inside the middle, but that was enough to give me time to get rid of it outside. This is good enough to get rid of a bug easier than using paper cups or a piece of paper and it doesn't smash them.

Bought this item for my 5 year old son, and man was he excited for it. Received it from amazon today and it doesn't even work. Installed 8 different batteries (it requires 4 AA batteries) and nothing. I read in a previous review that another customer received 3 in a row that were duds. Does this company have any sort of quality control? Or are they just throwing these together as cheaply and quickly as they can? I suspect it's the latter. IF you received one that works, i'm happy for you, but I have one disappointed little dude in my household.

I was able to pick up a couple of mid-sized crickets with this, but you pretty much have to get right on top of them. The suction is VERY weak.
It does work, but not nearly as well as it might have with a slightly stronger motor. Some insects will laugh at the weak suction and you'll need to slide the nozzle to break their grip. This is a nice idea for a product, but the execution is very cheap. 20-30% more suction would do the trick. The built in light is pretty much useless.
When I first tried it, the suction was so weak I thought it was broken! Again, it can work, but don't expect too much.

I know this is not really the intended purpose, but I got this do suck up the spiders that have infested every corner of my house. I do not kill spiders, I trap and release, so when we got to the point of multiple spiders making a home in every corner of some rooms, I had to find some way to humanely get rid of them.
I decided to give this bug catcher a try and have had great success with it. I personally cannot catch them myself, they end up running away or falling, but my fiancé is really good at it. He has capture nearly all of them.
Most of our spiders our daddy long legs, with a few different species that are thicker and creepier-looking.
My advice if you use this for the same purpose, do not suck in the web. Otherwise you will not be able to catch the spider because they will just crawl back out using their web.

I bought this not for the toy aspect, but so I could catch spiders and bugs in my house and release them outside. The magnifying glass was just a bonus :). As a toy it would probably be fine. However, even with 4 AA batteries, the suction is very poor and it's hard to catch flies with it. The light is so dim as to be pointless. It's also a bit of a pain to release the bugs.

Still kinda fun though! I'm giving it 4 stars because I'm sure it's a great toy.

I have purchased three of these and love them. They're excellent to have around the house. But all three were assembled incorrectly at the factory and required a few minutes of rework.

These vacuums use directional impellers. All three that I purchased had the motor wires soldered backwards. They still work, but the impellers are spinning backwards and will have reduced suction and airflow. If you take them apart and swap the wires they work better. I would have given them 5 stars if not for the manufacturing flaw in all three that I purchased. They're great once you fix them.
