Buying Guide

Mattresses are designed and engineered for very specific functions: to cushion the human body, providing support and a comfortable place to relax, de-stress and sleep. The average adult requires seven to eight hours of sleep every night while children and teens require even more. Inadequate sleep can lead to chronic health problems and impaired functions for routine tasks. Since bodies and lifestyles differ, it is not surprising that mattress choices seem limitless with regard to size, construction, materials and overall design.

Mattress Sizing

Whether you are buying a mattress to upgrade from an old one you already have or choosing one for a new bed, it is important to know the exact dimensions of the mattress that matches your bed frame or platform.
Here are the standard dimensions for the most common categories:

Classification

Length

Width

Twin

74 inches

39 inches

Twin Extra Long

80 inches

39 inches

Full

74 inches

54 inches

Queen

80 inches

60 inches

King

80 inches

76 inches

California King

84 inches

76 inches

Note that there may be slight variations in these dimensions, depending on the mattress manufacturer. Pay attention to the actual dimensions cited instead of the classification alone. This is especially important if you are buying a mattress for an antique or custom bed.

Mattress Type Based on Construction and Design

A wide selection of mattresses is available for each size, so it may seem like mattress shopping is a wild adventure. Save yourself a lot of grief by understanding the three basic construction types.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses may be engineered from either polyurethane or latex foam. These materials yield to the pressure exerted by your body to adapt to the contours, resulting in better support regardless of sleeping position. This mattress type molds to the body, limiting bounce as you move around although some users may find it difficult to shift positions. The mattress should spring back to its original shape when you get out of bed. Latex foam is supposed to be hypoallergenic although both foam types tend to trap body heat, which may not be a desirable feature in warmer climates. However, gel-infused foam mattresses have been developed to address this issue.

Innerspring

Traditional mattress construction uses steel coils to ensure support, durability and flexibility. The steel coil component comes in different configurations to offer various firmness levels. Variations in the steel coil design include individual coil insulation, number of coils per square inch and differences in how the coils connect to each other. These types of mattresses are typically more affordable. Special features may be incorporated in the mattress design to create different product lines. Extra features may include variations in the number and types cushioning layers, addition of a pillow top layer and gel infusion. It is interesting to note that the number of coils is less likely to influence mattress quality while coil construction and coil connections are better determinants of mattress quality.

Combination Foam and Innerspring Mattress

Hybrid mattresses consist of coil springs topped with one or more layers of foam. This type of mattress construction makes it easier to move around on the mattress compared to the pure foam version. That said, be prepared for some bounciness caused by tossing and turning on the bed.

Comfort Levels

Comfort level refers to the firmness of the mattress. There are benefits to users at each level, and finding the most suitable level will hinge on personal preferences.

Firm

The degree of compression for a firm mattress is limited even when it is subjected to a lot of weight up to its rated capacity. If you have back problems, a firm mattress may be the best option because weight is distributed more evenly and back support is optimized. These mattresses tend to keep their shape longer than softer ones and remain functional much longer.

Plush

A plush mattress will have one or more layers of cushioning within the mattress, providing additional comfort for users. It provides a good balance between the supportive features of a firm mattress and the softness of a standard pillow top.

Pillow Top

A pillow top mattress would be softer than a plush-style mattress. A baffled padding is added to the top for softness next to the body. The rest of the mattress may be designed for firm support. The pillow top is a popular mattress type because it blends comfort, support and softness.

Adjustable Comfort Levels

Some mattresses are engineered to provide variable comfort levels so that people with different preferences can adjust the firmness level to their liking, using a remote device. This feature is especially important for queen or king mattresses that may be shared by people with different preferences. These state-of-the-art mattresses typically cost more than the other types.

Shopping for a Mattress

Unlike other consumer products, comparison shopping is almost impossible when it comes to mattresses because manufacturers offer many versions with slight differentiation, depending on the retail outlet. The best shopping strategy consists of doing the background research and creating a list of priority features. Next, visit brick-and-mortar mattress retailers to test different mattresses that have the features you are looking for. Spend some time lying down in different positions on different mattresses.
If you plan to buy from an online source or other retailer where testing is not an option, make sure you understand the return policy. Some retailers and manufacturers offer a comfort guarantee of 90 to 120 days from delivery. This is free trial period where you use the mattress. If you are not satisfied, a full refund or credit for another mattress will be given if you make the request within the stated period.
It also pays to take note of the warranty, which should range from 10 to 25 years for manufacturing defects such as broken coils or premature sagging. Coverage is prorated and decreases over time.

Not all beds and mattress types require a foundation or box springs. Also, you may not need a new set of box springs with every mattress purchase, so don’t be persuaded into buying a set if you don’t need it.
Buying a mattress is not an impulsive decision because important matters are at stake. Your comfort, sleep patterns and health conditions may be affected significantly if you choose one that is not suitable to your needs. Given the wide selection of mattresses on the market today, you should be able to find one that meets your requirements with careful research and planning.
