Buying Guide

When shopping for SD Cards, an easy give away would be the HC and XC options written on the packs. HC indicates less than 32 GB capacities, while XC, indicates more. Since we will be looking more in depth at 64 Gigabytes specifically, you can guess which of the Cs you would be seeing more on the packets of the recommended products. Another important feature to be on the look out for, would be the ‘write capacity’ of the secure digital card. Usually this is shown on the card as C2, C4 and so on indicating the different speed classes. The write capacity of an SD card simply means how fast that card can write information to its memory, especially while capturing a video with your device. A C10 or Class 10 indicates that it writes at a speed of 10mb per second or greater. A test that was run on a SanDisk SD card model with a C10 indicator, showed a write speed of 17 mb/s, and a 64gb capacity. This brand is highly recommended for Samsung Galaxy S7 users.
You can tell that speed and capacity are always the important features to look out for when buying a secure digital card, but an often overlooked feature is compatibility. Most SD cards are designed for smartphones, and may or may not be compatible with a digital camera. The reverse may also be the case, and often times, using an SD card designed for a camcorder on a smartphone, could actually corrupt that SD card.
Compatibility comes into play when picking the right SD card format for the device in question. Like all things good in this world, SD cards come in various sizes, and adapters, therefore check to make sure of the size that its destination requires. Having generally started out measuring 32x24mm, smaller cards for smart phones usually measure between 21.5x20mm and 11x 15mm. These are called miniSD and microSD cards respectively.
There are three known DS card formats, two of which I vaguely touched upon in the introduction.
They are the MicroSD, which has a maximum capacity of 2GB, MicroSDHC, with a maximum of 32GB, and MicroSDXC, ranging between 32GB and 2TB. The MicroSDXC is the required format when the purchase of a 64GB SD card is the goal.
Also before purchasing an SD card, you must have a pre-defined purpose for it. This helps in choosing the desired speed. When capturing in HD video mode, it is paramount that a class 10 secure digital card be used, and UHS speed class 3 should be specified if shooting a 4K video is the goal.
Unfortunately, buying fake SD cards might be a problem tackled after bunnies begin to fly, with even SanDisk recently admitting that a third of their cards out in the market were duplicates, we as buyers can use certain utility tools to make sure we are not falling victim, or at least reduce our risk of doing so. The first giveaway is usually the packaging; as much as the manufacturers of the fake SD cards try to imitate the real ones, they often leave some common errors while creating the packets. I would highly taking a look at what an original package looks like, after you have selected the appropriate SD card that you may want, before placing a purchase.
Reviews are always important, therefore, it is recommended to check them when purchasing SD cards online, do not get carried away by the brand names on offer, rather take a deeper look at the reviews left by previous buyers, this way you can easily tell if they have a history of selling the imitation of the originals SD cards.
People tend to generally go with the bigger/more known brands, but only give the less known brand of SD cards if there is a budget, this is neither good nor bad. To be on the safe side, the more expensive brands always win it for me. Spending the extra money is absolutely necessary if the data that would be stored on the secure digital card is of even far more value to you, its user.
A popular occurrence with a fake or less known brand of SD card includes getting filled up at the 20 or even 15GB mark, whilst having a clear 64GB capacity indicated.
In our world, budget is always a factor. The purse of a college student is sadly not as deep as that of a working class individual - well, except you are Erik Lefkofsky.
I do not believe that money should be considered when getting a secure digital card, rather the value for the data it is required to hold, or even the important role it plays in a professional setting, if being used for business purposes.
For a buyer with a relatively low budget, with a class 10 specification requirement, I would recommend the Hyundai SDXC card. This is an absolute steal, as they seem relatively new to the market and offer a lower price incentive, with all other features as its other well known competitor. However, if a UHS speed class one is a requirement for compatibility, then other more affordable brands, like Maxonor might be considered.
In the case of a buyer with deep pockets, I would highly recommend the Sandisk Extreme Pro. With a UHS speed class of 3, and also C10 capabilities, you are guaranteed speed and quality at that extra price. The caution here however is to be on the lookout for fake SD cards bearing this popular logo. Another option for this class of buyers, even though much cheaper, would be the Lexer pro, which usually comes with a USB reader.
The Kingston professional MicroSDXC card represents good value for money. A trusted and reliable manufacturer of storage devices, this is both affordable and durable.
Although a usually tumultuous ordeal, I hope this serves as a friendly guide as you purchase your 64GB SD card today.
