Buying Guide

With the number of products available today some people are probably wondering, "What is the best aux cord I can get and what determines the price of the one I buy?" others may just want to keep a spare around in the case the cable that came with their headphones or speakers etc. happened to break on them or just plain stop working in general. It wouldn't be surprising if a few even thought "Why would I buy an aux cable when I can just get bluetooth set up in my car?" which is true, but the best sound quality still comes from a wired connection and that makes auxiliary cable the most viable option for most people unless your card has built in support from the factory, but most don't. That being said a buying guide has been compiled to help you find the right product for you starting from the lower end and moving on to the more high-end cables that are a bit fancier.
Low-end cables are best for people who can't get a higher end cable when they want and need something quick to hold them for a bit. The lower end cables are good to keep as spares just in case something happens to your current cable and won't be able to replace it on the spot. It's always a good idea to keep at least one spare male to male and a male to female cable in drawer somewhere then you don't have to wait for your replacement to be shipped if any local stores are out of stock and you're left with no cable. Low-end cables are called low-end because of their build quality. They look similar to better cables but just don't hold up as well, a low-end cable could last 5 minutes or 5 months there's no way to really tell. A low-end cable would be something like this
Retractable cables tend to be lower in build quality since the center piece that holds the reel together is usually a low-grade plastic. It's common for these to break often, but can still hold up well if used temporarily as a back up and it's well taken care of. Normal low-end cables like theseare more likely to hold up for long enough to replace the cable with a better one. Low-end cables can be hit or miss so for the most part the rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for; if you decide to buy cheap expect a cheap product that may or may not last.
Standard cables are what most people will end up buying since the average person will take care of them enough to not need another as a placement. Standard cables can be found just about anywhere and their build quality is pretty decent across the board. The chances of buying one of these cables and finding out that it doesn't work anymore is pretty low so most people don't worry about making the purchase for a top of the lime cable, they just don't feel the need to. Buying a Monster cable like thisor these Audio Technicawill likely be the first cable you buy and end up replacing due to some sort of accident.

These cables are the name brands that most people would probably recognise if they were shopping in a store since they're usually placed next to their corresponding headphones or speakers. Since this is the middle ground it's strongly recommended that name brands should be the initial purchase and buy either lower or higher end cables depending on if you need a spare or feel you have the option to upgrade. Any name brand cable you pick should last for as long as you need it since they're all decent build quality.
Last but not least, the high-end aux cables. When buying different products a lot of people will offer the same advice "You get what you pay for.' but that isn't entirely true in this situation. High-end will be used loosely here because for a product like this you don't need anything extra that more expensive cables offer especially since they aren't any more durable than most standard cables, you're really just buying the brand. Cables like thismay be aestetically pleasing but to pay this much you can buy enough standard cables to last you years.

High-end aux cables are sold on the idea that you like they way they look and the fact that they get the job done is expected with the name. When you buy a product from a company like Sennheiser you pay for the name and all the expectations that come along with that name. This cable is listed for almost double what it could be, but you're buying the name along with the cable which by reputation adds more value to the product; the Sennheiser brand has a reputation worth the extra moneyThe full value of a product in any market isn't determined by quality or material composition alone. When a product under a certain name is purchased like Apple for example, the price is higher than a more generic product in part because you're paying for the assurance that you're getting the best of what you can buy as marketed by Apple, which there is some truth to. Big companies like apple can get the highest quality materials to have their products manufactured if they should choose to, but even though this is true that does not mean it is guaranteed that you are buying a cable or any other product of the highest quality available. In the list above I linked some cables that are half the price of Sennheiser cables with positive ratings. This is something that should be considered before buying anything whether it's audio equipment or electronics. Buying cheap isn't always the best decision and paying for the most expensive products is no guarantee that you are getting the best possible product.
