Buying Guide

When purchasing a DSLR camera, there are a number of features to consider. DLSRs offer substantial advantages over point-and-shoot cameras and smartphone cameras. Their ability to have a lot more control over the outcome of a shot and their ability to gather a lot more light than standard cameras make them an excellent choice for those who are interested in taking their photography to the next level. Below are some of the most important features a future buyer of a DSLR camera should keep in mind before making a purchase:
1. Price

Unless you are independently wealthy, most people have a set budget they are able to spend on a DSLR camera. Entry-level DSLR cameras can begin at a few hundred dollars for the body only. Intermediate-level DSLR cameras tend to be priced from $800-$1500, and advanced DSLR cameras designed for professional use can cost a few thousand dollars.
2. Sesnor

Contrary to popular belief, the sensor in a camera has more to do with the final image quality than the number of megapixels. While megapixels do play a role in making the large-print shots that professionals create clearer, they do not make much of a difference in everyday DSLR use, and all of the recommended DSLR cameras above have a sufficient megapixel count to create great images.

Sensors have two factors that determine the quality of the images they are able to produce: type and size. There are three types of sensors including CCD and CMOS. CMOS sensors generally produce better quality images overall, but both kinds of sensors have their strengths. Most DSLR cameras have a CMOS sensor. Sensors for DSLR cameras come in two sizes including APS and full frame. Full-frame sensors are capable of creating the best quality images in a DSLR camera, but they are a lot more expensive and are generally included only in the more advanced DSLR models.
3. Lenses

One of the best parts of using a DSLR camera for photography instead of a point-and-shoot camera or a smartphone camera is the ability to change lenses. This means a greater ability to capture good shots from both near and far. Wide-angle lenses are best for capturing panorama shots while telephoto lenses are capable of getting a close look at a subject that is a greater distance away. Sometimes when you buy a DSLR camera, you are buying the body only. Other times you are buying both the body and a wide-angle lens or the body and both a wide-angle and telephoto lens.

4. LCD Screen

While DSLR cameras have LCD screens for the purpose of navigating the options and features of the camera as well as viewing photos already taken, it is less common to be able to use the screen to be able to compose a shot as you might with a phone or point-and-shoot camera. Using the viewfinder might take some getting used to, but it is certainly very doable.

5. Frames per Second

Different DSLR cameras have different ratings when it comes to how many frames per second they are able to shoot. The more frames per second they are able to shoot, the more likely it is you will capture the precise moment you are hoping to catch.

6. Advanced Features

Another one of the nicest things about DSLRs compared to other kinds of cameras is that they allow the photographer a great deal of control over shots. Features such as ISO, focus points, aperture and more can all be controlled using a DSLR. This allows for a lot of artistic creativity for budding and experienced photographers. More advanced DSLRs allow for control over even more features such as the ability to create custom layouts.

With all these features considered, which of the six DSLR cameras recommended above is best? A lot of that depends on what your main considerations are when buying a DSLR.
Low Budget

If price is your main concern, you will probably want to stick with the Nikon D3400. This camera is perfect for the DSLR buyer on a budget at just $496.95 for the body and a wide-angle lens. It has enough features to keep you occupied for a long time to come, especially if you are a beginner.

High End
If your main goal is to find a high-end camera with all the features you need to take professional-quality shots, consider either the Nikon D7200 or the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Both of these cameras are among the best in their class and are capable of doing a lot of advanced tricks that will leave your shots looking stunning.

Best All Around

The Canon EOS 7D Mark II contains a number of features that will satisfy the photographer looking to enter professional territory but who is not quite yet ready to spend the thousands of dollars a professional DSLR camera can cost. The 20 MP APS sensor, its ability to shoot 10 frames per second, the 65 autofocus points and numerous other great features all make this camera a good choice for the serious photographer.
Buying a DSLR camera might seem overwhelming, but with an accurate understanding of what to look for, it's a task that becomes a lot easier. Your goals and considerations when shopping for a DSLR will help guide you to the right choice. No matter why you are looking for a DSLR camera, there is surely something available in the market to help you capture the shots you have been dreaming of.
