Buying Guide

When looking for a good quality cup there are many things that you need to look at. Most of these things have many subcategories as well. These are the top things when looking for a sippy cup for your little one.
  • Price
Price is one of the biggest factors that parents look at. You want to make sure that you are getting a good product for the price. You don't want to spend $15 on a cup that you can buy at a different store for a cheaper price. Sippy cups can range in price a great deal. They can be anywhere from $8 to over $20. The best thing you can do is shop around and just find the best cup for the price.

  • Ounces
Another thing that a lot of parents look for when finding a good sippy cup is the ounces. One thing about sippy cups is they come in a lot of different ounces. You want to make sure the cup you are getting has the right amount of ounces for the child's age. For example, if your child is just starting out with using a sippy cup then you should go with a cup that holds 5 ounces. On the other hand, if your child is older and has been using sippy cups for a long time but drinks a little more then you should go with a cup that holds 10 ounces or 12 ounces.

  • Spout Type
There are many different spout types to choose from. Each of these different spout types are best used with certain age types. You have to make sure that you purchase a cup with the right spout for the age of your child because if you don't then they will have a hard time with the cups.
    • Soft Spout
These kinds of spouts are made of either silicone or plastic. They are similar to the way a pacifier feels. These are really good for when you just start transitioning your child to a sippy cup. Since this spout has to be sucked on to get the liquid out, it's easier to start with because children do the same with bottles. These are only recommended for use for a short period of time because children may become dependent on the sucking motion and it might be harder to transition them to an actual drinking cup later on.

    • Free Flow Spout
These kinds of spouts are made from hard plastic. With this spout type, the way the child gets the liquid out is just by putting the spout in their mouth and tipping the cup. The liquid flows right out. Two things that should be noted are: 1. this type of spout lets liquid come out at a faster rate so it is completely normal for your child to gag at first and 2. this spout makes the spilling of liquids happen much easier than other spouts.
    • Straw
This spout is just a straw inside of the lid. One good thing about this type of cup is that the straws usually have some kind of stopper inside of it. In other words, if the child isn't sucking on the straw then liquid can't come out. These types of spouts also help exercise different muscles in your child's mouth.

    • Natural Drinking Cub
These cups are recommended for children who have been drinking out of cups for a little while. With these cups, there is a spill proof valve that lets liquid go around the lid slowly when your child presses on it. This would be the sippy cup that your child uses right before they transition to a normal drinking cup.
  • Material Type
There are many different materials to choose from. Those materials are:
    • Glass
While glass cups don't have any harmful chemicals and they are durable and resistant, especially to scratches they are heavy and can be easily broken. If this happens there's a chance your child or you can get cuts from the broken glass shards.

    • Plastic
This material is what the majority of sippy cups are made from. Not only are they hard to break but they are very lightweight. One thing to consider, though, is that you want to make sure you choose a cup that is BPA free as you don't want all those harmful chemicals.

    • Stainless Steel
While these aren't too popular, they are the newest type of material in the sippy cup industry. Some of these types of cups have insulation so you can keep your child's drink at the temperature that you want it to be. This material is also pretty much unbreakable which is good since we all know toddler's can be a little rough!
  • Cup Design
There are 3 pretty basic designs that most cups have. Those designs are:
    • Short and Wide
These are the best to use for children just starting out. These are easy for little arms to life.

    • Contoured
These usually have a slimmer part in the middle of the cup. This is easy to hold because they have that little groove and they can use both hands to hold it.

    • Tall and Slim
These usually work for older toddlers. Since the cup is bigger they hold more liquid and they are a little harder to bring up to their mouths.
  • Handles
When looking at a sippy cup, you have to look at the age and development of the child as well. If your child is younger and just starting out with sippy cups then you should get a cup with handles. These make cups easier to hold for small, uncoordinated hands.

  • Leak-Proof
You want to make sure that the cup you choose is leak-proof, especially for younger children. You don't want to get a cup that can spill easily. This will help keep messes and spills to the minimum.

  • Cleaning Difficulty
This is an important feature. You want to make sure that the sippy cup you get doesn't have hard to clean nooks and crannies. Not only can this harbor bacteria but it can also keep liquids such as milk and juice in them which makes them get old and spoiled. If this happens then your child can get sick.
