Overall Opinion: When it comes to free anti-virus software, AVG has been at the top of the game for a while now. There is still a free version of the software available, and the paid version comes with a 30-day free trial to let users determine if it will suit their needs. The free version is still burdened by ads and toolbars, though, and this can be problematic. Since 2016, AVG has been merged with Avast. The AVG platform still has the same user-friendly interface that it always has, but it has seen some enhancements to its scanning engine. The software has become much more adept at detecting "zero day" threats than it was in years past, and the engine has been improved to scan for lines of suspicious code that may or may not represent a threat. In addition to traditional virus monitoring, AVG AntiVirus will also scan files that are downloaded from the Internet and email attachments. It is recommended by the developer to keep the software running at all times to conduct scans right away. Unfortunately, the program does not offer a game mode. This can create problems with resources when a user is playing games, and it can affect video streaming. As always, when the software begins a full scan there is a noticeable reduction in processor speed. Pulling up the interface of the program will allow a user to begin a full system scan. This can be accomplished with one click but can take hours to complete. It is also possible in the new version of the software to perform what is called a Deep Virus Scan. This scan looks at every aspect of the system and is very thorough in removing problems. Even though it has some drawbacks, AVG is still one of the best free programs available. The suite can be purchased for a nominal cost and includes many tools that are not found in the free version.
Pros: Excellent protection from malware File shredding feature High scores on independent testing Do Not Track feature
Cons: Extra features are limited in the free version No quick scan option No game mode
