Buying Guide for Fondue Pots

When considering which fondue pot to buy, you need to determine whether or not you want an electric or flame heated pot. Electric fondue pots are easy because you can simply plug them in, you don't have to plan ahead. These pots have a greater amount of temperature control making them suitable for cheese, broth and dessert fondue. The down side to electric pots is that you can't take them anywhere, they have to be within reach to an electrical outlet. There is also some claims that they are hazardous because people could trip on the cord, thus spilling its hot contents.
The fuel heated fondue pots take a little more planning to ensure you have the proper items needed to heat the pot. These fondue pots are more difficult to use because you don't have as great of control over the temperature; these pots usually have a low, medium and high setting, which varies depending on the pot. From the comfort of your kitchen to an outdoor gathering, the nice thing about these pots is that they are easy to move from place to place. There are three types of fuel heat sources that are used. The first type is Butane; this fuel source offers the greatest amount of temperature control when compared to other types of fuel heated fondue pots. Butane can also be used for all types of fondue and are easy to refill with Butane cartridges. The second type of fuel used is alcohol. This is a good option for cheese and meat fondue, but often burns chocolate. When using an alcohol fondue pot you should only use denatured or isopropyl alcohol. The last type of fuel used is gel fuel. This type of fuel burns less hot meaning that it's great for chocolate and cheese.
Next, you need to determine the kind of quality you want out of your fondue pot. If you want a more inexpensive pot, a ceramic pot would be the way to go. If you want something that is more durable then a stainless steal or cast-iron pot would be your best option. Some of the more expensive pots come with color coded forks, easy grip handles and support rings; these items simply add to the price of the pot. Just because you don't get these items with your pot doesn't mean you are getting a bad pot.
When buying a fondue pot you also need to consider size. Do you want it to feed one or two people or a large group of people. You can get single serving fondue pots that are sometimes referred to as fondue mugs or pots that can hold 64 ounces which would feed a larger crowd.
There are several different types of fondues: cheese, chocolate, broth/oil are the most popular. When buying a fondue pot you need to be aware of what type of fondue pot you are buying.
Cheese and chocolate are usually made from earthenware or ceramic. They normally have straight sides, a flat bottom and low heat retention. These fondue pots sometimes flare out at the top allowing people to easily dip and swirl their food. Cheese and chocolate pots typically use an adjustable alcohol or gel fueled burner; these types of burners allow you to maintain a constant temperature which will keep the cheese from getting hard and the chocolate from burning. Tealights can also be used for heating cheese and chocolate. An example of a good cheese fondue pot is the Swissmar KF-66517 Lugano 2 quart cast iron pot.
The next type of pot is a broth/oil fondue pot. These pots need to be able to get up to and stay at a high temperature, without breaking. Being able to get and stay hot ensures that your meat is cooked through. These pots need to be made out of stainless steal, copper or cast iron because these materials can withstand the high heat. Fondue pots used to cook meat typically curve inward to help prevent the oil or broth from splashing out. An example of this would be the Cuisinart CFO-3SS Electric Fondue Maker.
When buying a fondue pot you also need to take into consideration the additional items that you will need. The first thing you will need is forks. You should have enough forks to give each person two, one fork they can use for dipping and the other fork should be used for eating. For dipping and cooking longer skewer-type forks with a heatproof tip should be used. As for eating, any fork will do. You may also need divided plates or several regular plates to set the food on. Having separate or a divided plate set will ensure you don't cross contaminate food. The nice thing about the divided plate is that they can help set the tone for a fondue party.
There are fondue pots that fit every price range. You can spend as little as $30 dollars and still get a good pot. However, if your looking for a good all-around fondue pot, plan on spending a little more. The All-Clad 59936 is a great all-around pot. It is stainless-steal which is great for your fondue containing meat; however, there is a ceramic insert that can be used if you are wanting to have cheese or chocolate fondue.
Eating fondue with family and friends can be a great way to have a relaxing meal together. Spend time catching up with each other while you gorge yourself with delicious food and treats. Laugh at each other's inability to properly dip their food without making a mess. One thing is for sure, a good fondue set is sure to help make lasting memories.
