The sun is finally here. After months of cold bitter winter, a short peaceful stroll through spring, it’s time to finally enjoy the heat and fun associated with the summer months. Summer for most people is a fun and exciting time, full of outdoor adventures to be had. From whitewater rafting, rock climbing, dirt-biking, you name it. There is no end to the number of things you can do during the summer months. It’s not uncommon for some summer days to be so unbearably hot. Actually, most summer days can be excruciating during mid-day, especially when our enjoying your favorite outdoor activity. Breaking a sweat in the sun is easy to do, even if your just fishing, especially if your fishing! That’s why most experienced outdoor lovers know that investing in a quality sunhat can save you a ton of energy. Not to mention, a ton of water.

Budget First

It’s easy to get lost in a sea of hats, not sure of which one is better. Most of us begin with the basics; Which one blocks out the sun more effectively? Which one is the best for fishing? Well, before you begin asking those questions, the first thing you need to do is figure out the budget. Sun-hats can range dramatically in price, from a measly 5 dollars to over 50 dollars. By deciding how much “hat” you can afford, you preventing yourself from overpaying and more importantly having “Buyer’s remorse”.
For us, we recommend hats between the $10-$25 range. We find the hats in this range are well equipped and reasonably priced, again depending on the style you like to have (More on that later). Once you get budget set, it’s time to take a look at some key hat qualities.

Sun-Hat Qualities

Brim and Neck flap

A good sun hat does more than just make you look adventurous while hiking. It’s also a hat that has a nicely sized brim to protect your eyes and your head from excessive heat. A great sun hat does all of the above but with the added neck flap, it can also protect portions of your neck from sunburn as well.
Mesh Top/Sides

Many sun-hats come with mesh tops or sections that allow heat from your body to pass through the mesh, lowering the overall body temperature. If you have ever wore a baseball cap on a hot sunny day, you know why this is important. If anything else, your hair will thank you.
Waterproof Fabric

This is a no-brainer when it comes to sun-hats. It will undoubtedly get wet one way or another. Whether getting wet means your sweat is so intense it soaks through the hat, a sudden sun-shower drenches you, or a monstrous catch pulls you into the lake. You’ll want a hat that can dry quickly and keep its shape. For this reason, most quality hats are made out of nylon fabric, polyester, or microfiber. These materials can keep your hat ticking even after a heavy soak.

Adjustable
Believe it or not, having an adjustable hat can really save your life. If you purchase a sunhat that’s either too small or too big, obviously that can create some harsh difficulties for you. Not to complicate things even further, but in some situations, you may find it necessary to either loosen your hat or even tighten it. An adjustable hat can work with you, is your slamming the gas pedal in your ATV, tightening it up may be a smart move. Once you get to your fishing spot, losing it can be a really great way to add some ventilation while waiting for the fish to bite.
Style

Great style is important to everyone, that’s why I saved the best for last. After you nailed down the functionality of your hat, it’s time to look for one that satisfies the suave style you’ve developed over the years. It may not seem difficult, put finding a hat with the right qualities is easy, finding a hat that you feel pulls it all in together is much harder. While this may be a matter of pure opinion, we find that hats lined with mesh around the top and even the sides are a great starting point. Once we nail that in, we look for a hat with a short neck flap for some added protection. A lighter color like beige usually blends in well with whatever else your wearing, but neon colors can be quite entertaining as well. While I can go on all day about what suits me, it may not suit you. Just remember to stick to the quality points listed above when it comes to what your hat should defiantly have.
