Finding the perfect necktie shouldn't be as difficult as a tough day at work. The right tie will not only help you look and feel professional, it will make a statement that is reflective of your taste, style and professionalism. If you are looking for a career, trying to beef up your wardrobe, impress someone, going on a hot date, or have another event that requires a suit and tie, this is a must read! I will give you a few tips to make it easier and faster to look sharp.

Quality of Fabric

The most important factor in finding a necktie is always quality. The overwhelming majority of ties are made of silk, and this is the material you should be looking for. Try to avoid fabric blends if possible and if the tie feels "cheap," it will probably be regarded as such. A few extra dollars on decent material will stretch much further than weird looks and lost opportunity. Silk also tends to stay cleaner than other materials due to it's smooth texture, and is much easier to fashion into a knot. Cashmere and cotton ties are also viable options, however for a traditional office setting or formal event, silk should be the material of choice.
Quality of Workmanship

Look at the stitching used to make the tie. Is it reinforced? Does it look like it will hold up, or does it look like it may fall apart on an exceptionally windy day? Is there a strong horizontal stitching about 3/4 of the way down the tie, or is it just a single stitch? If the stitching in any part of the tie appears to be weak, irregular, or made of noticeably cheap thread, pass this one up and keep looking. While I suggest varying your wardrobe, this is where brand loyalty can come in somewhat handy as manufacturers tend to use the same workmanship standards among their products, although checking is still very much necessary.

Construction of the Tie

Although related to quality, there are several elements to look at when selecting your new tie. A good place to start is the slip knot. This is a piece of fabric that extends out from the blade tip. This is a nice feature to look for as it will reduce wear and tear from tying and untying and adjust the knot tension quickly. Expect to pay a little more for ties with this feature as it's an indicator of good quality and higher end brands.

The necktie should consist of three pieces, independent of each other. The blade is the large part of the tie, the tail is the smaller and thinner part of the tie and the piece that connects the two should all be clearly noticeable. The material of the tie should be cut on a 45 degree angle, diagonally across the grain, which helps it retain its shape and structure over the years. If the tie contains a pattern, it should be consistent along the tie, and not disconnect at any noticeable point. The reverse side of the tie that doesn't show should also appear to be of quality construction, and not have frayed fabric exposed or appear disjointed. The back of the tie should also have a holder made of one or preferably two pieces to keep it in place and not showing the rear of the tie at any time. Personally, I'd recommend trying the tie on before buying it to see how it looks overall, and of course to make sure it returns to its original shape after being untied. If it doesn't, move on to the next. This is a red flag that the tie is not well constructed, and most likely made of inferior material.
