Description

Speedtest.net is a free web service that performs various forms of analysis of a broadband Internet connection. It does this by communicating with a server in the nearby area, and its analysis include...s both upload and download speed tests as well as latency tests. Tests can be performed either through the company's website or by using one of their mobile apps. Instead of testing connections by sending data over HTTP, Speedtest.net notably tests connections by sending data over a direct TCP socket. They further use a custom developed protocol for communicating between clients and servers. In addition to performing tests, Speedtest.net displays a number of different statistics based on the test results. Among the reports they offer is a market report, which displays comparative speeds of Internet service providers (ISPs) in a number of cities and countries. Overall Opinion: For many years now, Speedtest.net has been the standard way to test how fast your broadband Internet connection is. It has become so standard that, as of 2017, 10 billion speed tests had been performed on the site. The site allows users, within seconds, to see just how fast their Internet connection really is, and compare this to the speed that their ISP contends it provides. Among the many positive aspects of this service is the vast number of local sites that they provide for testing, the cool looking (and Flash-free) speedometer they use, the ability to easily share test results, and all the detailed statistics and reports they provide. They also have mobile apps to test cellular connections as well. Best of all, Speedtest.net is completely free to use. There is not much to dislike about the service. But the user interface could probably be a little simpler and less graphically intense. Also, most of the test sites are in North America and Europe, making the site less useful for all the many people in the world who live outside these areas.

Pros: Is completely free to use Has lots of local sites for testing an Internet connection Has a cool looking speedometer to demonstrate how fast your Internet connection is Does not use any Flash in its UI Provides the ability to easily share test results Can test mobile connections Performs tests quickly

Cons: Has an interface that is perhaps a little too complex and graphically intensive Has limited local testing sites outside North America and Europe
