Overall Opinion: Samsung Kies is an old piece of software that is designed to be used with older Samsung smartphones. Current devices use Samsung Smart Switch to enable all the same functions available in Samsung Kies. Samsung Kies was the premier way to backup data and transfer media content between your PC and smart device until around 2016. The service was also how Samsung issued firmware upgrades for devices when OTA updates weren't being sent through the user's carrier. The app is geared toward power users who want to update their phones and manage their media and data, so the interface can be a bit hard to understand at first. Samsung has a full guide that is available on their website for how to use this software if you find it too confusing when you download it to your phone. Samsung Kies itself is an acronym for Key Intuitive Easy System, which Samsung shortened to Kies. There are two different versions of Kies available on the Samsung site. Kies 2.6 supports Samsung smartphones and tablets that were released before the Galaxy Note III. Kies 3 is available for Samsung smartphones and tablets that debuted after the Galaxy Note III. This software is outdated and only works with older phones since Samsung has since upgraded to a different program for those who want media management features. But with how popular cloud computing is these days, most people store their media in a cloud locker that can then be accessed from any device instead of requiring a wired transfer. Unless you have a phone that is older than the Samsung Galaxy Note III, you probably won't need this software for your Samsung device.
Pros: Allows secure transfer of media from PC to smart device Upgrade firmware on Samsung devices Offers wireless firmware upgrades through the Kies Wireless Android app Easy to install and set up
Cons: Requires installing on PC Can be weird to use if you're not technical minded Can't recognize specific file types like .avi
