Overall Opinion: For those unfamiliar with the concept, torrenting is a unique method of downloading files. Rather than relying on a single large stream of data coming from a lone server, torrenting relies on the combined power of the many people around the world who currently have the file you are looking for. This method enables users to share files easily and quickly with large crowds of people. By combining the bandwidth of many users much higher speeds can be achieved most of the time than relying on a single connection. However, to achieve this complex feat a special software is needed called a torrenting client. BitTorrent is one such client as is one of the more popular options at the moment. BitTorrent features a simple interface that displays tabs on the left to view your active torrents, what files you are downloading, and what files you are uploading. This is one of the perceived downsides of torrenting that cause many people to shy away from the practice. Once you have downloaded a torrent file you become part of the network of users who are uploading the file. Within the settings of BitTorrent, you can set a fixed upload to download ratio though, which gives you control over how much data your computer is putting out. Typically it is considered courteous though to have a ratio of at least 1:1, meaning that for each file you download you contribute at least an equal portion of data to the torrenting network. This ensures that files you download can be downloaded by the next person who needs them and so on. BitTorrent is free to download but has several features that can be activated with two tiers of paid subscription. For one, the program displays ads in the bottom left if you are using the free version. If you decide to upgrade to a paid subscription these ads are removed and you gain features such as automatic virus protection and the ability to stream torrents. Overall, BitTorrent is a solid option for both complete torrent novices and seasoned veterans with its simple interface hiding a multitude of advanced options.

Pros: Streamlined user interface makes picking up torrenting easy for new users Lightweight program consumes minimal system resources even while downloading files Ample features are tucked away in advanced settings menus for power users

Cons: Ads are displayed in the bottom right Free to use for torrenting along but many features are locked behind a paywall
