Overall Opinion: Digital is no longer just the future of music: it's the present. It's now been decades since the rise of Napster brought the prevalence of CD media grinding to a halt, and the intervening years have created new avenues to listen to music in a fully digital format and store larger amounts of music more easily. But that doesn't mean there's not still a role for physical storage. Many individuals like having the security of a physical backup, and CDs can be one of the most effective way for small bands to sell their albums. Whether you're looking to transfer your collection of childhood CDs into a more convenient and accessible platform or help an older family member transition int the 21st century, a CD ripper is the best solution around. CDex offers all the features you can expect to find in a modern CD ripper, and it's completely free to use. There are countless formats for storing sound files these days, and one of the most important features a CD ripper can have is the ability to convert into a variety of different forms. Fortunately, CDex comes equipped with a number of different encoders that give you a large amount of control of how you save the data from your CDs. Plain WAV files are the standard and are ideal if you're looking to take your sound files and compile them together into a mix tape; but other options like MP3, FLAC, WMA, and AAC are also included. Also important is the accuracy of your CD ripper. Older encoders were often slow, and the process of conversion could frequently result in corrupted data. CDex runs smoothly and effectively regardless of the file type you want to use or the volume of the tracks being converted. Whatever reason you have for converting CDs to digital, the process itself is purely utilitarian, and CDex has smartly made the process of conversion a painless affair. Multiple tracks can be recorded at the same time, so you can simply pop a disc in, run the program, and rest easy knowing that it will automatically run on its own. And once the tracks have been ripped, you won't have to worry about cataloging them painstakingly into your library. CDex can read or store the information from your tracks using either the CD's INI file or a local or remote CD database so you'll have access to album, artist, and track information immediately. From there, you can integrate it into your online music folders quickly. It also supports CD-text. CDex is designed to be compatible with a wide range of CD drives from a variety of different manufacturers. A host of configuration options allow you to create an experience that's tailored to your unique needs, and the core interface is intuitive and designed to put ease of use front and center.

Pros: Open source and completely free software Quick setup and simple but robust configuration options Great interface displays everything users need clearly and concisely

Cons: Hasn't been updated in years, and source code isn't readily accessible Packaged with questionable sponsored program installations
