Maptitude 2020 use in Public Health

Overall Opinion: I have used Maptitude since it was version 3 in the 1990s. I have taught it in public health settings in 9 countries and 20 states and at the U of WA, Seattle, CDC Atlanta, when I was an epidemiologist at the Washington State Department of Health. I have also taught ArcGIS. I have taught workshops up to 2 weeks in length in spatial epidemiology using Maptitude or ArcGis. I have taught semester-long courses using Maptitude. In general, I find that students of all backgrounds are mapping on their own having mastered the necessary basics in a couple of days. It takes ArcGIS students well into the second week. All my students were interested in mapping and doing spatial modeling on disease incidence, environmental risk factors, socioeconometric risk for disease and medical care outcomes. You can see in an instant how an infectious disease is spreading, why rural hospitals are failing, or just how a toxic waste site might be a source of unexplained cancers.

Pros: Cost. It is a lot cheaper than other commercial GIS. Excellent customer support. New versions always add something useful, not just bug fixes. Excellent performance. Lots of well-documented GIS data. Good training videos. Geocoding is good. Importing and exporting to other GIS or apps, databases, and data formats is very good. The learning curve is reasonable even for people with modest computer backgrounds. One really can learn Maptitude on your own.

Cons: Maptitude has a scripting language that allows you to write your own code for spatial data manipulation. It is pretty comprehensive but I wish it was built on a more familiar scripting language. That said, the vast majority of users never need it and it really is not THAT difficult to learn.

Using Maptitude for over 20 years

Overall Opinion: I've been using Maptitude since the early Beta days, 20 plus years ago. Authoring the nationwide mapping interface for EDF's Scorecard, I needed a GIS that could handle all the data at once for the entire nation. Maptitude proved to be the solution plus it was fast, included all the data I needed. That was in the early 1990's and since then I've never looked back or looked at another GIS. Maptitude is by fat the easiest to use, most powerful and best bang for any buck. Try it you won't be sorry.

Pros: Ease of use and comprehensive included data.

Cons: Nothing comes to mind.
