Overall Opinion: Rosetta Stone was first released in 1992. It quickly became the most popular method for learning languages. It is a computer-assisted language learning solution that has helped hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. It is an especially useful program for expats and others who often find themselves abroad. Dynamic immersion is the hallmark of the Rosetta Stone language programs. Users are given instruction in grammar and syntax, presented with reading opportunities, and can hear the language being spoken. A microphone will also allow the user to receive critiques on their pronunciations from the program. It is an intelligent program that can be used immediately by those with little or no computer experience. There are 28 different languages to choose from. It is even possible to purchase a license which will grant access to all of them. Many users purchase a language program outright for a one-time fee. Others choose to buy a monthly subscription which gives them ongoing support as they master a new language. The software includes many extras such as mobile apps, a phrasebook, and TruAccent. The last is a proprietary method of tracking your pronunciation of words. This is a very useful feature because it stresses practicality. Most individuals want to learn a new language because they desire to put in into practice. There are some negatives. It would be nice if Rosetta Stone included more cultural elements. For many individuals, immersing themselves in a culture is an effective way to learn. A placement test would also be useful for those who have some prior experience in a language. Beyond that, the program is much more cost effective than hiring a private tutor and less frustrating than trying to learn on one's own.

Pros: Blends audio and visual learning Helps with pronunciation

Cons: Does not have a placement test Very little cultural information Can be expensive
