Overall Opinion: Whether for video game development, fancy artwork or realistic computer generated movie effects, having great technology for 3D models and textures is paramount to ensuring a high quality product. One of the leaders in this field is Allegorithmic, a respected French company whose software has led to the birth of some outstanding digital creations. One of their products, Substance Designer, is considered the industry standard for high quality processing of scan modeling and PBR material authoring. Substance Designer can create virtual materials with an infinite amount of variations. Full texture sets can be edited instantaneously, and MDL materials and textures can be exported directly into rendering programs and video game engines. Tiling textures support eye-watering 8K resolution in 32-bit float, and .sbsar files can be modified in place with an expansive suite of tools before being exported. Substance Designer can import many file formats, including procedural sbsar and sbs files, .fbx, .obj, photographs, hand painted images and other types of scans. The product works seamlessly with Substance Source, which provides assets for modification, and Substance Share, which provides download access to community created assets under the Creative Commons 4.0 public license. Work can be previewed exactly as it will appear in rendering engines, such as Unreal or Unity, and other game engines can be emulated by using custom shaders. Yebis post processing effects can be added to renders for an incredible, photo-realistic sheen.

Pros: Pretty much the highest tier of 3D material processing Available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Pricing is surprisingly reasonable. It's a $149 one time fee (for lower income, indie designers) to buy the software and it includes a year of maintenance

Cons: Pricing scales with revenue, so higher earning companies will have to pay more to use the software
