yWriter Reviews
We have 1 review for yWriter. The average overall ratings is 4.0 / 5 stars.
Overall Opinion: For novel writers who need an organizational and data-driven approach to writing, yWriter is the word processing software for you. The software divides your project into manageable scenes that you can drag and drop to appropriate chapters. You can select certain tabs for more information on the locations, characters, and other plot points in your story. The one downside to this structure, along with the lack of customization, is you cannot use it for anything other than novel or screenplay writing. The software has a practical and easy to use interface with standard Windows controls and default fonts. This feature ensures that you do not get distracted by unique fonts, a variety of themes, and fun icons. Because of its minimal features, the software does not take up much space on your operating system. You can also set up daily work goals, or have them automatically created from a deadline that you set. yWriter also has the capability to track certain data points, including the word count of a certain character, or the number of scenes each character is in. Because it is free, and has tracking and organization tools along with a distraction free interface, yWriter is worth a try for novel or screenplay writers.
Pros: Scene and chapter structure makes it easy to organize your plot and keep track of all parts of your story Provides a ton of tools for developing your story and tracking the development of characters Gathers data on your novel to give you a big picture of all the parts of your story Free to download and use without pop-up ads User interface is simple and easy to use to keep distractions to a minimum Minimal design takes up little space on your Windows or Linux system
Cons: Does not currently work on Mac computers or mobile devices Lacks necessary features and templates for screenwriting Hard to figure out how to back-up your writing using third party programs The simplistic interface may cause boredom for some writers Lacks customization features to adapt to other types of writing
