Overall Opinion: While some might find it annoying that you can only download Chromium OS as a source code file, others will enjoy that it essentially removes a step for those who want to alter the software in any way. Those who don't can simply compile the source code with a system compiler so it can be run through a virtual machine. The code for Chromium is Linux-based, so it has a solid foundation and operates quickly. Users will find that the operating system is reminiscent of a web browser that has been expanded to encompass full control of the system on which it is running. Perhaps the thing that makes Chromium stand out the most is that everything within it is based in the cloud. This means that the software can use less space on your device since all the functionality and storage happens at a data center. The processing is basically all that happens through the Chromium operating system, which is why it can operate so fast while taking up so little space. Almost nothing has to be actually installed on your hardware since the vast majority of the utility is based in the cloud itself. The fact that Chromium works through the web is what makes it ideal for mobile platforms like smartphones and tablet PCs. There's a huge range of devices in those categories that might be too limited in their technical specifications to perform with advanced operating systems, but Chromium is small enough that it can work seamlessly on devices that couldn't support any other OS. All you need to get started is a Gmail account. You can use the same credentials to login to Chromium OS, and you'll be connected right away. It might seem strange at first considering the amount of utility that it feels like you're getting from an app, but you'll constantly be reminded that the app you're imagining is the operating system itself. It's as if the software merges the two most vital elements of a modern computer system. You won't have to learn how to use the software, because you already know how to use web browsers. The difference is that this browser includes the full scope of control over the system. What's interesting about Chromium OS is that it starts to blur the edges of what defines an operating system. Now that wireless communication and web-based software can be found everywhere, the way computers function on a foundational level is starting to change. No longer does a single system have to handle everything itself. Processing power can be stored at a secure location, which frees up the need for physically powerful hardware.
