Value For Money

Overall Opinion: The iversity site is straight-forward, with a single goal in mind: Get you interacting with their courses. Initially, you are presented with a choice of finding a course, browsing featured courses or signing up for a newsletter. Using the course finder is easy and quick. Simply choose a timeframe, a type of course and a language, or type in keywords and hit "search." You are presented with a list of free and paid courses. Clicking on a course takes you to a detailed page with information about the course. This includes identifying the target audience for the course, prior knowledge required, learning objectives, course structure and the type of interaction involved in taking the course. There is also information available about the instructor(s). Iversity was the first European platform to offer Massively Open Online Courses (MOOC) for credit. MOOC are courses aimed at being available for unlimited participation offered via the web. Iversity does this using a mixture of video lectures, reading and forums for student interaction and participation. Iversity has struggled financially and filed for insolvency in 2016. An investor was found who brought new life to the site, with a focus on providing paid courses for Business-to-Business (B2B) customers. The free MOOC content will remain on the site at this time, while iversity and the new investor determine a path forward.

Pros: Offers both free and paid courses covering a wide variety of topics. Courses are offered in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Many courses are offered in collaboration with universities, and some courses offer European Credit Transer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits, which are education credits students may transfer between universities in different countries.

Cons: The majority of the courses available via the site commenced in 2017. Choosing the "Starting soon" option in the course search screen returned no results. All of the press releases and press coverage linked on the site are out-of-date, with the most recent being from 2016. The most recent press release speaks of iversity having filed for insolvency and attracting a new investor. The free MOOC content is currently available on the iversity site. However, this may not be the case in the future.
