Overall Opinion: As the demands of web development have become more complicated, so have the tools necessary to meet the needs of the everyday consumer. Where once a full understanding of HTML was enough to get a modern website up and running, developers today need to wear a variety of hats. HTML and CSS are a necessity, while an understanding of deeper and more modern languages like JavaScript and PHP can help developers get a leg up on the competition and give them a more robust toolkit to implement the features they need to stay competitive. MODx offers the tools developers need to manage their web content as well as deal with the complexities of hosting all in a single platform. Web professionals have been using the MODx platform for over a decade, and it's managed to grow to keep pace with the growing demands of the industry. Part of that is the open source structure that allows the development team more control of how their project develops and the means to respond reactively to changes in the web development community. Many CMS structures lock users into making use of theme systems that limit them to specific languages or make them work around the demands of existing templates to put together the web content they're looking for. That's not the case with MODx. It was a pioneer in the industry, supporting HTML5 and CSS3 from the start, and its flexible and open ended structure means that it will always provide support for new languages and versions as soon as they come out the gates. They also support omni-channel content. Complex web content doesn't always translate the same way onto different devices, but with MODx, you can create unique variations of your site that deploy in parallel regardless of the different languages being used in their structure. Some radical changes to MODx's UI a few years back, implemented as a rebranding as MODx Revolution, did the service a lot of favors. Even less tech savvy users will find it easy to navigate the MODx dashboard. Migrating content from existing sites is as simple as a few keystrokes. The backend makes use of a clean tabbed structure that provides the categories you'll most use right in front of you, and the information you need is responsively displayed in the windows below. Much of what you can expect when you sign up for a CMS is pretty standard stuff. MODx offers all the bells and whistles available in most CMS' along with an impressively open-ended structure, the ability to scale to the demands of even the most complex web applications, and a GUI that's exceedingly simple to navigate. MODx is one of the standards on which web developers rely on, and it's a reputation well earned. Additional cloud services and a robust customer service experience round out an exceptional all around platform.
Pros: Great GUI puts everything you need where you need it Supported by a huge number of customer support services like auditing and custom development
Cons: Making the most of the software will be a challenge to anyone without PHP knowledge
