Overall Opinion: Orbit Downloader is one of those pieces of software that seems tailor made for the times. As the level of media we consume becomes concentrated on the internet and the number of options available to us become seemingly limitless, Orbit Downloader serves as an easy way to access the information you need. Orbit Downloader is an add-on that runs right in your browser and manages your downloads. It's specially constructed to focus on downloading embedded videos from sites like YouTube and vimeo, and what it does, it does well. Unfortunately, it carries with it the specter of an earlier time, when freeware was supported by legions of unwanted software packaging. Orbit Downloader is clearly built for the consumer who doesn't want to be restricted by the fickle demands of their internet service provider or entertainment platform. Its quick and intuitive design makes the process of downloading videos or music from social media sites a breeze, and a user can learn the ins and outs of the software in a matter of minutes. What it does, it does well, and through the use of peer to peer and multi-source download technology, it offers some of the best download speeds around. It's the furthest thing from a resource hog as well. Orbit Downloader is incredibly lightweight, weighing in at less than two megabytes and typically using less than three megabytes of memory when running. It can be easily accessed through your browser, meaning there's no need to load up a whole software platform every time you're looking to download a song or video that interests you. However, as internet speeds and browsers become more advanced, the difference between the download speeds offered through Orbit and those you could expect from a direct download are drawing closer and closer together. The compatibility here is great though. It works on all versions of Windows and runs just as it should on all modern browsers. If you're simply looking for a quick and easy way to download videos, Orbit Downloader fits the bill, and it's completely free to use. But just because Orbit Downloader doesn't carry a price tag doesn't mean it doesn't come at a price. Orbit is utterly encumbered with junkware. As soon as you start installing the software, you'll be presented with an overwhelming number of suggestions for other software to install, and even if you opt out, you can expect programs you probably don't want to start installing immediately. This creates obvious risks for spyware and malware to be installed on your machine in addition to just being a hassle. Even the software itself comes packed with advertisements for other products. While Orbit Downloader offers some nice little features, it probably isn't worth the time you're going to spend hunting down and deleting all the other software that comes packaged with it.
