As its name suggests, the software was designed to be used with the Windows operating system. Even though the program is simple to operate, the encryption it provides is military-grade. GNU Privacy Guard is what drives the program and it can be used on versions of Windows that still have ongoing support from Microsoft. The purpose of encryption is to scramble data into random strings of numbers and letters. The data must then be decrypted before it can be read. GPG4Win functions on the premise of public and private keys. The user of the program will have one of each. Public keys accomplish encryption. They can be shared with other individuals who can then use them to encrypt emails and files. The private key is known only to the user and is required to decrypt the data. Secret keys are kept on a user's computer and protected with two-factor security. The key cannot be modified or altered. The private key is also assigned a passphrase for additional security. Encrypting emails may sound complicated but this software is very simple to use. It can be installed with the included wizard in a matter of minutes. Once installed, there are plug-ins available for Outlook and other email programs which permit quick and easy encryption. Files can also be encrypted manually from the program window itself, and there is an entire library of documentation and tutorials available for those who need help.
