Janrain is customer relationship management (CRM) software and service designed to obtain user identities. Notable customers include McDonalds, Pfizer, Whole Foods, NPR, PetSmart, Hershey, AMC, Rogers..., Kia, Michelin, MLSE, Cox Media, illy, Coca-Cola and Phillips. The company behind the software, Janrain, Inc., was founded in 2002 in Portlan, Oregon, and credits itself as the creator of the first CIAM (Customer Identity and Access Management) software and service solution in 2008. The company is one of the founders of the OpenID Foundation, which is responsible for some of the digital authentication protocols used around the world. They were recognized by The Forrester Wave in June, 2017. The software boasts 1.5 billion managed identities and over 3,400 clients in 65 countries. Overall Opinion: Keeping track of customers is old hat for most businesses, but the recent explosion of the CRM market has proven that there's a lot of money to be made from really getting to know every last detail about the user experience. Janrain is one of the forerunners in this field, and their years of experience in pinning down customer details sets them apart from the other players. Janrain specializes in customer identity, and its able to pull data from a couple dozen "identity providers" that many people are familiar with. An identity provider could be any site or service that stores a user's data, such as Facebook. By pulling this data, Janrain can provide individual profiles for each and every customer that interacts with a client's website or products. It's easy to see how this could be useful. Products, events and overall user experience can then be custom tailored to a customer based on their browsing history, interests and "identity of things."

Pros: Enormous wealth of resources available on the Janrain website to help users understand the concept of customer identity and learn the ins and outs of the service

Cons: Prices are by quote only, and given this company's history of dealing with extremely big names, expect a hefty price tag
